great Italian dictator. And it was papal Rome that blessed the legions of 11 Duce when they marched away to their discredit able and nefarious war on Ethiopia. It is papal Rome that is blessing the Fascist banners of Spain, as well as all other Fas cist banners of Europe. It is papal Rome that is slowly but surely regaining “ a place in the sun” within the counsels of the mighty. P a pa l R om e R ejoices after th e E lection All well-informed persons know that the recent election in the United States brought great joy to the heart of papal Rome. It is of course a well-known fact that Mr. Farley, the campaign manager of President Roosevelt, is a staunch Roman Catholic. It is also well known that the Pope of Rome expressed himself publicly as being ex tremely happy over the outcome of the elec tion. Eugenio Cardinal Pacilli, the papal Secretary of State, the highest ranking offi cial of the Vatican that ever visited the United States, probable successor to the present Pope, was invited by President Roosevelt to a luncheon only two days after the election. He expressed himself as being very happy over the results of his visit with the President of the United States. He left this country, apparently beaming with joy as he returned to report to the “ Holy Father” in Rome the progress of the Church in the United States. ion, whose unique nation-wide poll fore cast the vote on November 3 more closely than did any other, published a very sig nificant report of that poll. They reported that of all the ballots they received in which the voter indicated his religious preference, 57% of the Methodists were for Landon, and 43% for Roosevelt; 54% of the Lutherans were for Landon, 46% for Roosevelt; 63% of the Presbyterians and Episcopalians were for Landon, and 37% for Roosevelt; 72% of the Reformed Church were for Landon, and 28% were for Roose velt; 78% of the Congregationalists were for Landon, 22% for Roosevelt. Among Protestants, only the Baptist Church (46% for Landon, and 54% for Roosevelt), due to its tremendous membership in, and the prejudices of, “ The Solid South,” preferred Roosevelt. (The Literary Digest must have sent all its ballots to Protestants!) It is evident that Protestant church members did not elect Roosevelt. Now weigh carefully the following fig ures, also given us by the American Insti tute of Public Opinion: 82% of the Jewish vote was for Roosevelt, while only 18% was for Landon; 78% of the Roman Cath olic vote was for Roosevelt and only 22% for Landon. In 1932, the Roman Catholic vote was still higher, 86% being for Roose velt and only 14% for Hoover. The eight-point defection from Roosevelt among Catholic voters since 1932 was due largely to the defection of Alfred E. Smith and Father Coughlin. The significance of these figures is tre mendous. As a reader of history, we can but wonder what might happen if those “new instruments of public power” of which the President spoke should fall into the hands of the spiritual “ puppets” of an old and well-known religious “ autocracy” ! They once did! Students of history know what happened! W e R est U nafraid We like not to have to admit it, but the fact is that our national election last No vember revealed that in earth’s greatest nation, where once “the faith of our fathers” was supreme, and where, after Lincoln, no “ shackles” even threatened liberty, we are now more “ keyed to the temper and yearn ings of the world” than we are keyed to the temper and yearnings of the Spirit of the living God. The Lord Jesus Christ re ceives no recognition at the ballot-box. Neither is He acknowledged in our marts. He is scorned in our schools. He is politely bowed out of our social circles. And, sad dest of all, the true Christ, the Christ of the Bible, is welcomed no longer in the majority of our churches. But, we are not in despair. Rather, knowing what it all means, we can rejoice greatly. Since the Scriptures cannot be broken, these things must needs be. If they come, let them come. Since the prophecies that speak of the com ing of the night fail not, then neither will the prophesies fail that speak of the coming of the dawn, when “the Sun of righteous ness [shall] arise with healing in his wings” (Mai. 4:2). In the peace that this world can never know, we rest unafraid. The world awaits its lord. W e wait for ours. Come, Lord Jesus, come!
