MARCH 5 The Means o f Victory

DAILY Devotional Readings A MESSAGE FOR EVERY DAY OF THE MONTH

"One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after: . . . . to behold the beauty of the Lord” (Psa. 27:4). I believe there are two things essential to victory: a real, abiding manifest joy in what He has done for us by His finished work, and such a steadfast beholding of Him at God’s right hand for us that, be ing occupied with Him, we shall lose sight of ourselves and all else, and really be changed into His image from day to day, transformed by beholding Him. Who shall do this for us and in us? The same Holy Spirit who lived and wrought in Christ Himself, and whom He has given to all believers, and who is more desirous to fill us than we are to be filled. How shall it be done? Let us present our bodies a living sacrifice, yield unreservedly to God, and let Him unhindered work out His perfect will in us.'—D. M. S. MARCH 6 Invincible Faith " For by thee 1 have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall” (Psa. 18:29). Apparently unconquerable difficulties yield to an invincible faith. “ Do you think,” said the captain of the ship which bore the first missionary to China, “that you will make an impression upon four hundred mil lion Chinese?” “ No, sir,” replied Morrison, “ but 1 believe God w ill!” That was the trumpet note, and when men sound that, even “ a feeble saint will win the day, though death and hell obstruct the way.” —J oseph P earce . MARCH 7 Everlasting Refuge “ For I am the Lord, I change not" (Mai. 3:6). What a comfort it is to know that in His faithfulness and power to save, our God is not subject to change! With joy we em brace this one certainty concerning the fu ture: our Father will walk beside us all the way. Whatever else may change in this restless, fleeting life, God changeth not. Father or mother may have to leave us, earthly friends may prove unfaithful, but God is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. Heaven and earth may pass away, but in His faithfulness and love He abideth the same, “yesterday and today, yea and for ever.” “ Onward, then, and fear not, Children of the day; For His Word shall never, Never pass away.” —H. J. T riezenberg . MARCH 8 Giving Christ Preference “ In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up” (Psa. 5:3). T o find Christ in the sanctuary twice on a Sunday is no substitute for meeting with Him in the secret place during the days of the week. Every life must have a trysting place, where solitude gives opportunity for meditation, and the soul receives courage for sacrifice, and strength for conflict. “Meet Him in the morning, each recur ring day;

From wells of salvation with joy The beautiful waters o f life. And filled with the spirit of peace, In harmony’s sweetest accord, My raptures shall daily increase, Ineffably one with my Lord.

MARCH 1 Wells o f Salvation

"Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation” (Isa. 12:3). The God o f Salvation is mine; Never more will I be afraid, But trust in His favor divine And rest, on His faithfulness stayed. The Lord is my strength and my song; My heart shall rejoice in His love, Till I join the glorified throng, And praise Him forever above. And therefore my daily employ Is to draw, ’mid confusion and strife, S UNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS, GOSPEL WORK ERS and others. MARCH 2 What Faith Sees

"Looking unto Jesus” (Heb. 12:2). "Be cause he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors” (Isa. 53:12). Men can paint Christ bearing the cross on Calvary, but not Christ bearing the sins o f many. We may describe the nails pierc ing His sacred flesh, but who can describe eternal justice piercing both flesh and spirit? We may describe the soldier’s spear, but not the arrows of the Almighty; the cup of vinegar, but not the cup of wrath which He drank to the lowest dregs. Happy were it for us if our faith had as lively views of this object as our imaginations have of incomparably less important objects. May we hear that peace-speaking blood that speaks better things than that of Abel. —J ohn MacLAURiN. Faith makes invisible things visible, ab sent things present, and things far off near unto the soul.—T homas B rooks . MARCH 3 The Glow o f His Presence "Shall thy wonders be. known in the dark?” (Psa. 88:12). Christ takes no more delight to dwell in a sad heart than we in a dark house; there fore, let in the light which sheds its beams upon thee from the promise, or else thy sweet Saviour will be gone. Christ brings such good news with Him as may bespeak better welcome with thee than a disconsolate spirit. Resort to God daily, and beg a stronger hope of Him. That is the way the apostle took to help the saints to more of this precious grace. God, you see, is the God of hope, and of the abounding of it in us also.—W illiam G urnall . MARCH 4 Our Good Samaritan "H e had compassion on him . . . and bound up his wounds” (Lk. 10:33, 34). In every detail the story of the Good Samaritan has its counterpart in spiritual truth. It tells of a Saviour who saves; who comes to a sinner where he is and as he is; who binds up wounds that are deeper and more terrible than any brigand’s knife can inflict; who brings him out of the place of danger to a place of security and peace, and provides for all his future needs. And all this without bargain or condition, and unconstrained by any motive save His own infinite compassion.—S ir R obert A nderson .
