Connected thinking. Globally.

“During my first seat I worked on a joint venture acquisition of a £232 million portfolio of 1,857 beds of purpose-built student accommodation – one of the largest UK student accommodation deals agreed in 2018. I was responsible for the preparation in the run-up to close, liaising directly with the client with regard to completion logistics. This is a personal highlight to date, and I was presented with a special recognition award for my contribution to the project.” Amy Moylett, Trainee Solicitor, Thames Valley

“I was recently involved in a large cross-team, cross-office refinancing deal which I have helped lead from the Real Estate side. I drafted and negotiated documents and was the first point of contact with lawyers on the other side. Throughout the deal my supervisors encouraged me to be proactive and discuss my own thoughts and views – I always felt that I was supported and challenged. It has been a fantastic learning experience.” Georgie Green, Trainee Solicitor, Bristol

Fascinating work

With work spanning eight of the biggest industry sectors, how do you explain all the areas an international full-service legal practice covers?

True, you can highlight the fact that we’re nearly always in the top 10 for M&A deals, that our disputes practice handles some of the highest-value litigation, and that our property practice is among the largest in the UK. Or that all three of our UK offices – Bristol, London and Thames Valley – have an expertise in premium work, providing an unrivalled combination of global reach and local knowledge. With well over 850 talented lawyers based in 26 offices* around the world, we continue to be at the forefront of technology and innovation, working with clients ranging from traditional global tech businesses to those creating the latest breakthroughs in AI, robotics, blockchain and 3D printing. We’ve also created OC Solutions, a bespoke shared technology platform that is re-inventing how our commercial, regulatory, property, corporate, litigation and other services are delivered to multinational businesses across a range of sectors.

Our key practice areas include: Banking Commercial Corporate Employment Litigation Real Estate

“In my second seat I was negotiating directly with a large brewery’s in-house legal counsel on the release and recharge of loan security over a number of their pubs. The brewery hadn’t instructed external lawyers so I had to draft most of the documents and talk them through the transaction.” William Pullan, Associate, Bristol

“The highlight of my vacation scheme was helping a partner prepare a pitch for a high- profile prospective client in the digital business sector. From this task I learnt a lot about the firm’s international and multi- jurisdictional work, and I was able to appreciate how closely the firm’s international offices work together.” Maxine Penny, Trainee Solicitor, London

The right environment

The OC training contract Opportunities available in Bristol, London and Thames Valley Four seats, including Corporate or Banking, Real Estate or Tax and Litigation Early responsibility and client contact Mentoring from an experienced supervisor and plenty of partner access Client secondment opportunities Formal practice-specific training Exposure to international work, as well as international exchange opportunities Immersion in an exciting, open culture

Right from the start, we’ll give you the chance to contribute to the fascinating work we do.

As a trainee, we’ll give you exposure to exciting, headline- grabbing deals and clients but also real hands-on experience on smaller matters that you can manage right from the start of your career. It is essential to gain a range of experience to allow you to take on increasing amounts of responsibility and grow as a lawyer. Plus it’s far more interesting. We believe small teams can do great things. Everyone’s input is valued and the scale of our trainee intake means we can offer an individualised approach that caters to your strengths and interests. We believe that to get the very best out of people they should feel engaged in their work and in control of their careers.

Teamwork

Big deals. Big names. Newsworthy headlines. David and Goliath Never ones to shy away from a challenge, our IP disputes team won a trademark case of truly epic David and Goliath proportions, representing UK-based activewear brand LNDR against global sportswear titan Nike. Our team successfully argued that Nike’s use of LDNR in its “Nothing Beats a Londoner” advertising campaign infringed on LNDR’s trademark registrations and would lead to confusion between the two. Nike pulled the ad as a result of an interim injunction we filed, and LNDR kept its reputation and brand image intact. Bionic limbs It was fist bumps all round when Open Bionics, manufacturers of 3D-printed Iron Man-style bionic limbs, received over £4m in funding from Foresight Williams Technology EIS Fund and Downing Ventures . Our Venture Capital team packed quite a punch on this transaction by advising the investors. Something they do well across all of our sectors, where they work closely with start-ups, angels and global market leaders. Super-charging the UK with energy innovation Our Energy Innovation team advised on pioneering and market-leading transactions in 2019. These were advising on the sale of renewable energy tech platform provider Limejump to Shell New Energies; the creation of a joint venture between Statera Energy and Statkraft to create 1GW of power matched with a virtual power plant; and doubling the number of electric vehicle charging points across the UK for Engenie via its £35m Cube funding round. These transactions are all significant milestones in helping to accelerate the digital transition of the UK energy system to a lower carbon future. Taking a bite Osborne Clarke is considered a go-to practice in the retail and consumer sector. So when Just Eat were looking to purchase office food delivery service City Pantry, our team took the call. Advising Just Eat on this key strategic acquisition meant we helped the takeaway giant expand its reach and take a slice of the corporate catering market. Protecting The O2 Our Real Estate Disputes team broke new ground this year by obtaining an injunction to put a stop to the dangerous practice of urban exploring at The O2 . The injunction, secured for The O2’s owner AEGEurope , prevents urban explorers from trespassing on the roof of The O2 and posting videos of their activities on social media. The team also persuaded the judge to grant an order requiring the removal of video footage from social media sites, as they could incite others to do attempt similar stunts and compromise safety and security at the venue – the first time such an order had been granted.

“While on secondment at a FTSE100 company, I worked directly with project managers advising on legal risks, contract drafting, and key areas of negotiation. I was given a high degree of responsibility and gained invaluable insight into how the client’s business operated.” James Robertson, Trainee Solicitor, Thames Valley

“OC is all about opportunities. Our partners have a strong track record for collaboration and believe in supporting motivated people to progress quickly. All the elements for a fabulous career are here.” Catherine Wolfenden, Partner, Head of Trainee Leadership Group

“On my very first day in Corporate I was asked to manage the documents in a deal worth millions of pounds – since then I have been involved with a wide range of deals that have enabled me to fast-track my development. At OC the supervisors and supervising partners encourage you to seek out opportunities for development, all

whilst being fully supported.” Joseph Blackburn, Newly Qualified, Bristol

“OC’s culture is great – you get a lot of responsibility and support. In my employment seat I was responsible for drafting witness statements for an employment trial, working directly with counsel and clients. It was fantastic experience to attend the trial, work alongside counsel and get the right result for the client.” Rebecca Chui, Newly Qualified, Thames Valley

“I have found the level of responsibility given to trainees to be really high. Duringmy time in the Banking team, trainees were encouraged to be a key point of communication between the client, the OC team and the lawyers on the other side. This encouragement, coupled with OC’s culture of openness and collaboration, means that I’ve been able to build really strong relationships in each of the teams I’ve been in, and learned loads more as a result.” Ben Pearlman, Trainee Solicitor, London

Not only do senior members of staff take the time to get to know you as a person, but they go out of their way to make sure you get as much experience as possible during your training contract.” Matthew White, Trainee Solicitor, London

“During my training contract I helped advise a company where a chief financial officer had embezzled so much money that the company entered liquidation. I researched how the money was sent and where the goods purchased were hidden.” Chloe Deng, Senior Associate, London
