Can the HMRC app help your employees? Published: 13 March 2023 Emailed: 15 March 2023
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has an app and recently they have been promoting this in an attempt to increase uptake. Since July 2022 it has seen over 340,000 people use the app to access employment and income information.
The app can be used to access employment history and income information, tax codes, National Insurance numbers and other details. This sort of information could take up to 10 days to come in the post, after a phone call through HMRC’s busy phone lines. This could be instantly available to individuals through the app.
The app can also be used to:
check tax credits get tax estimates
• • • •
calculate take home pay
claim refunds if too much tax has been paid.
The main driver for HMRC is to reduce calls to their helplines, freeing operatives to handle more complex or urgent queries. But, if this could also speed up onboarding, reduce tax code queries and provide employees with information they may find useful, it could be worth suggesting they download the app.
The guidance page contains links to download the app on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

It was mentioned in HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC’s) February employer bulletin, but it’d definitely worth repeating; you will no longer be able to submit P11D forms in paper format from 6 April 2023.
