New legislation expands on who can sign a fit note for SSP purposes Published: 14 June 2022 Emailed: 15 June 2022
Legislation has been introduced which expands the authority to sign fit notes from just doctors to include other healthcare professionals.
The Social Security (Medical Evidence) and Statutory Sick Pay (Medical Evidence) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2022 highlight that registered nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists and physiotherapists can issue fit notes after they assess a patient's fitness for work. Fit notes are the most common form of medical evidence that workers give to their employers so that they can be eligible for sick pay. The change reflects the role of multi-disciplinary teams in healthcare and highlights how sometimes it is alternative healthcare professionals that lead a patient's diagnosis. It will reduce the burden on doctors as they will get less referrals and it will remove unnecessary delays for patients who need a fit note.

CIPD Good Work Index dives into the ‘great resignation’ Published: 21 June 2022 Emailed: 22 June 2022
With the ‘great resignation’ or the ‘great rethink’ being a hot topic around staff retention and employee wellbeing, it is helpful to have some quantifiable data. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has published the Good Work Index 2022 which explores the results of a UK workers survey. Here are some of the key takeaways from the executive report: • 7% of workers surveyed had left their jobs in the previous 6 months, up from 6% in previous years • 20% of workers felt it was likely they would quit their job in the next 12 months, up from 16% in 2021 • Responses stating it was unlikely they would quit in the next 12 months returned to 2020 levels, 2021 likely reflected the reluctance to move during the pandemic • 34% of workers think that it would be easy to find a job as good as their current role • 43% would find it difficult to find a job as good as their current role, this is down from 62% in 2020 and 53% in 2021 • Better pay and benefits was the biggest reason cited for having left a role (35%) or for looking to leave (27%) • Presenteeism, working despite not feeling well enough, has risen from 35% in 2021 to 46% in 2022.
