HMRC names tax avoidance promoting directors Published: 1 September 2022 Emailed: 7 September 2022

Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has updated their list of named tax avoidance schemes, promoters, enablers and suppliers. There are now 15 named companies on the list. However, for the first time, HMRC has included the names of directors on two of those schemes.

The hope is that naming directors will help the public stay clear of other schemes that may have the same directors.

Director of counter avoidance, Mary Aiston, said in the HMRC press release:

“Naming the people behind tax avoidance schemes is a crucial step in helping customers stay clear of current and future schemes they promote.

“Our recent action should serve as a stark warning to promoters who think they can get away with peddling avoidanc e schemes. We will continue to use all the powers at our disposal to crack-down on promoters.

“Customers who think they’re involved in a tax avoidance scheme, should withdraw from the scheme and contact us for help as soon as possible.”

It is clear that HMRC is putting a concerted effort into tax avoidance and fraud prevention initiatives. This is the first time HMRC has used new powers enabling them to name directors, shareholders and company officers. These powers will also allow details to be shared much faster than previously, giving potential users of these schemes better opportunity to avoid them.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has recently added another name to their list of named tax avoidance schemes, promoters, enablers and suppliers.

The list aims to help contractors, agencies and businesses with identifying where potential tax avoidance is being conducted. It should be noted that a company’s absence f rom the list does not indicate that are approved by HMRC, new names are added to the list as and when able. Nor is it an indicator of all the types of schemes being operated.

HMRC is now making more use of its powers to publish details in relation to the tax avoidance undertaken. It is publishing details of other persons or businesses that have a role in the scheme.

The latest addition is Charteris Management Ltd, additional companies named are:

Taurus Limited (Incorporated Isle of Man)

• Howe Consultancy Limited (Incorporated Isle of Man) • Griffith Anderson Limited
