HM Treasury set up new ‘fraud squad’ Published: 28 April 2022 Emailed: 4 May 2022
The chancellor of the exchequer, Rishi Sunak, announced the formation of a new £25 million pound ‘fraud squad’ to tackle coronavirus scheme fraudsters on 27 April 2022.
The new body is recruiting top economic crime investigators and data analytic experts. The teams will recover fraudulently claimed covid support scheme funds and look for suspicious companies and people seeking government contracts.
With recruitment expected to start in the coming weeks, the CEO will answer directly to the chancellor and the minister for Brexit opportunities and government efficiency, Jacob Rees-Mogg.
Rishi Sunak Said:
“ We will chase down fraudsters who rip off the taxpayer. This elite fraud squad, backed by £25 million, will ensure the latest counter fraud techniques are being used to track down these criminals.
People are rightly furious that fraudsters took advantage of our vital Covid support schemes, and we are acting to make sure they pay the price. ”

Six benefit types coming to an end being replaced by universal credit Published: 9 May 2022 Emailed: 11 May 2022
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will be sending out letters, known as a migration notice, to individuals who are in receipt of benefits. All claimants for the below benefits will be transferred by 2024:

Child Tax Credit Housing Benefit Income Support
income- based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Working Tax Credit
Personal Independence Payments (PIP) and other such benefits will not be affected.
Individuals will have three months from the date the migration notice was sent out to act and claim universal credit. This time is given to gather information and documentation for the claim process. Individuals who cannot make a claim within the deadline are encouraged to contact the helpline as soon as possible.
