Fiscal statement delayed until 17 November 2022 Published: 26 October 2022 Emailed: 26 October 2022

The Treasury has confirmed that the fiscal plan, due to be delivered on 31 October 2022, will be delayed until 17 November 2022. It will also be upgraded to a full autumn statement.

The statement will come with a fiscal forecast from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) and will “ contain the UK’s medium term fiscal plan to put public spendin g on a sustainable footing, get debt falling & restore stability ” according to a Treasury tweet.

The Bank of England will now need to make decisions on interest rates before the contents of the statement are known.

Guy Opperman returns to the Department for Work and Pensions Published: 28 October 2022 Emailed: 2 November 2022

Guy Opperman has confirmed, on Twitter, that he is returning to a role in the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Opperman left the role of pensions minister back in September 2022, and it was confirmed that Alex Burghart would be the minister for pensions and growth on 12 October 2022. Opperman previously resigned from the pensions minister role on 7 July 2022 but wa s reinstated the next day following former prime minister, Boris Johnson’s resignation.

Announcing the news, he stated:

“Delighted to be appointed by HM The King as Minister of State at DWP in the PM’s new Government. Lots of work to do and I look forwa rd to working with the new Secretary of State “

New financial secretary to the Treasury appointed Published: 28 October 2022 Emailed: 2 November 2022

Victoria Atkins is the new financial secretary to the Treasury, after being appointed on 27 October 2022. She is the Treasury minister who will be responsible for tax policy and customs.

Atkins previously worked for the Ministry of Justice, and from 2017 to 2021, she was the Parliamentary under secretary of state for crime, safeguarding and vulnerability at the Home Office. She was elected as the member of Parliament for Louth and Horncastle in May 2015. Prior to this, she was a criminal barrister.

Atkins said:

"We will be working hard to protect the vulnerable, as well as people’s jobs and livelihoods, in these difficult econo mic times. We will do this by restoring stability and growth in our economy.”
