CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Speech and Debate (Grades 6-8) Kennedy hosts a very successful speech and debate program. Students learn the skills of speech writing and public speaking while participating in an event of their interest. From aspiring actors to business professionals to elected officials, there are speech and debate events for everyone to participate in. Writing Club/Power of the Pen (Grades 6-8) Writing club is for students interested in exploring writing outside of the traditional ELA classroom and meets twice a month. During the first meeting, students are assigned a nontraditional, abstract, or creative prompt that serves as inspiration for an independently written piece of work. At the second meeting of the month, students share their writing and their peers provide feedback. Writing club serves as the precursory step towards Power of the Pen, a competitive writing team that competes against other schools. MathCounts (Grades 6-8) MathCounts is an academic math competition with multiple challenges that test the math skills of team members. Teams begin competition regionally in February and may advance to the state and national levels. YSU English Festival (Grades 7-8) A signature enrichment program, the YSU English Festival is an exceptional opportunity for young readers and writers. Participants read a selection of seven novels before joining hundreds of other area junior high students at an inspiring festival on the YSU campus, where they meet the authors, attend interactive workshops, and celebrate the power of storytelling with their peers.

Theatre Productions Upper and Lower Campus students are invited to develop their acting, singing, and dancing talents by participating in our two annual theatre productions.
