ECA WELCOMES UK GOVERNMENT’S CLEAN ENERGY JOBS PLAN

A new Clean Energy Jobs Plan announced by the UK government has been welcomed by the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) as a positive step towards achieving the nation’s net zero ambitions. The plan includes a target to create more than 6,000 direct jobs by 2030 in Northern Ireland across nuclear fusion, CCUS and GGRs, electricity networks, heat networks and energy efficiency and retrofit. Andrew Eldred, Deputy CEO of ECA, said, “It’s encouraging to see plumbers, HVAC

engineers and electricians acknowledged in the Clean Energy Jobs Plan as priority occupations where a major boost to recruitment and training is now required. “However, ECA is concerned that the Plan has very little to say about how that is going to happen. To date, there has been no sustained UK Government strategic engagement with the engineering services organisations which will be primarily responsible for training and employing this workforce.” ECA is aiming to work more closely with government departments to grow a domestic engineering services workforce trained to industry standards and equipped to deliver an efficient and safe clean energy transition. www.eca.co.uk

MTU EVENT HIGHLIGHTS AI’S POTENTIAL TO BOOST ENERGY EFFICIENCY

The vital role AI can play in energy efficiency, proactive maintenance and a smarter grid network has been outlined at a debate hosted by Munster Technological University (MTU) at its Bishopstown Campus in Cork on October 9. Concerns were also raised about the need to close the AI skills gap at the event, which featured representatives from SEAI, Boston Scientific, Schneider Electric and MTU. Speakers highlighted how

smart monitoring tools will provide the data needed to improve onsite energy efficiency and cut carbon emissions. Data will facilitate an intelligent approach to condition- based maintenance, while AI modelling and digital twin technologies will also enable manufacturers to make sustainable investments that align with the needs of the business. Fiona Lavin, Programme Executive at SEAI, said, “Industries are required to cut their direct emissions by 35% by 2030. The big area of opportunity within this is carbon- neutral heating for industry which is possible through electrification. The move to electrification will make it possible for industries to achieve a 70% or 75% share of carbon-neutral heating by 2030.” www.se.com

EIRGRID FORECASTS SUFFICIENT GENERATION TO MEET DEMAND THIS WINTER

New research by electrical industry training and certification body NICEIC highlights how the relationship between tradespeople and the public is becoming more transactional and less personal. The data also highlights a generational divide in how people interact with tradespeople working in their homes. The findings come at a time when mental health is a serious concern within the trades, with four out of five tradespeople reporting they have experienced stress, anxiety and mental ill health because of their work. NICEIC asked the public about a range of kind and polite gestures and found only 63% of people would offer a tradesperson a cup of tea, falling to 45% among 25-34-year- olds. Almost half of people (46%) wouldn’t let a tradesperson use their toilet. Respondents aged 55+ are the most likely to do so (71%), but only 34% of 25-34-year-olds would offer the use of their loo. NICEIC commissioned a survey of 2,000 UK adults in July 2025 using a third-party survey provider. www.niceic.com NICEIC RESEARCH REVEALS CHANGING PUBLIC INTERACTION WITH TRADESPEOPLE

EirGrid has forecast adequate generation capacity in the national grid, and a reduced risk of system alerts over the coming months, in its Winter Outlook for 2025/26.

New sources of generation, including completion of the 500MW Greenlink Interconnector with Britain and continued implementation of the Security of Supply Programme, have boosted grid capacity. While the system may enter the Alert (Amber) State during periods of low wind and low interconnector imports, it is not expected to enter the Emergency (Red) State identifying insufficient generation to meet demand. Two system alerts were issued over winter 2024/25, but due to storm weather warnings rather than capacity. A new peak

demand record of 6,024MW was recorded on January 8, 2025, due to cold weather. Provisional data from EirGrid indicates 42% of electricity in September came from renewable sources, with windfarms accounting for 34% of all electricity used in Ireland. EirGrid also said official metered data shows that by the end of July this year 753GWh of solar energy had been supplied on the grid, up from 659GWh for

the whole of 2024. www.eirgrid.com

FINAL SCHEME DESIGN PUBLISHED FOR RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY SUPPORT SCHEME

Northern Ireland Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald has published the Final Scheme Design for a renewable electricity support scheme.

The Renewable Electricity Price Guarantee (REPG) aims to deliver cheaper energy prices for consumers, incentivising renewable electricity generation and positioning Northern Ireland as a competitive and attractive destination for investment. The scheme aims to deliver lower energy prices and help achieve the Climate Change Act’s target of 80% renewable electricity consumption by 2030. “Increasing investment in renewables is essential to reduce our reliance on high-cost fossil fuels and deliver on our net zero ambitions,” said the Minister. “The publication of the REPG Final Scheme Design will boost renewable generation and deliver lower electricity costs to households than they are paying today.” The Department for the Economy will consult on REPG Terms and Conditions later this year, providing stakeholders with a key opportunity to input into the contractual aspects of the scheme. The first auction is anticipated in early 2027. www.economy-ni.gov.uk

A different kind of consumer unit has landed in Ireland – Meet FuseBox

Is circuit protection your business? Then you’ve probably heard of FuseBox. It landed in Ireland this year but has already made quite a splash across the water with its electrician-first products, competitive pricing and bold pink branding. Founded in Kilmarnock, Scotland in 2017 under the direction of Robin Forsyth – with industry experience dating back to 1996 – FuseBox has become the UK’s fastest-growing circuit protection company. Its formula is simple: listen to electricians and deliver products that make their lives easier. But launching in a new market raises fresh questions and challenges. THE BIG QUESTION: WHAT MATTERS MOST TO IRISH ELECTRICIANS? This has been at the top of FuseBox’s agenda leading up to its Irish launch. FuseBox has always aimed to strike a balance between what electricians want now and what they’ll need tomorrow, and that’s exactly the approach it’s bringing to Ireland. With a dedicated Irish range now available, it’s an exciting moment for contractors ready to see what a bold brand like FuseBox can do for them. CONTRACTOR-LED DESIGN IN EVERY FEATURE Traditional consumer units often feel cramped, leaving electricians wrestling for space. FuseBox gives you more room to work, making installations faster and tidier. Terminal bars are positioned above each DIN rail for wiring and testing, while all DIN rails are linked and fully removable so wiring behind them is hassle-free. In fact, its DIN rails are positioned 53mm from the base of the board, providing plenty of space so routing cables is effortless. Everything you need is in the box, including a full-length busbar that WITH A MOTTO OF ‘MAKING ELECTRICIANS SMILE’, FUSEBOX SUPPLIES A COMPREHENSIVE RANGE FOR EVERY JOB, OFFERING MORE SPACE TO WORK AND STRIPPING AWAY FIDDLY, OVERCOMPLICATED INSTALLATIONS…

COVER STORY

makes it easy to future-proof your installations. With FuseBox, every detail is thought through with the installer in mind. These features are just the tip of the iceberg in how FuseBox makes contractors’ lives easier. So, what exactly does its Irish range look like? A COMPREHENSIVE RANGE FOR EVERY JOB Big job or small job, FuseBox has the gear. Its single-phase consumer units - available pre-assembled or custom-made to your specification - are designed to strip away the fiddly, overcomplicated installations electricians used to put up with. For bigger jobs, its 125A three-phase boards deliver the same installer-friendly design on a larger scale, with generous space inside and cable entry points at both top and bottom - ideal for rising demand from building electrification. FuseBox also offers a full line of circuit protection devices, including MCBs and RCBOs, robust surge protection and isolation solutions. Every product is built for performance and full IS 10101:2020 compliance.

RCBOs. Unlike traditional split-load boards, where one RCD protects multiple circuits, a main switch consumer unit with mini bidirectional RCBOs 1P+N gives every circuit its own protection and future-proofs the installation. For years, the barrier to this type of board was the cost of RCBOs, making them a luxury for many jobs. But as prices have fallen, RCBO protection is now available - and FuseBox provides the only option in the market with this configuration available off the shelf. The benefits are immediate: no more nuisance tripping across multiple circuits, faster fault-finding and fewer callbacks. It’s also the most future-ready option, giving homes and businesses the flexibility to add new loads without compromise. This is a modern consumer unit built for today’s and tomorrow’s demands, proving how FuseBox is helping Irish contractors stay one step ahead. MAKING ELECTRICIANS SMILE What makes FuseBox’s story even stronger is the connection it has built with electricians. Scroll through social media and you’ll see it: contractors proudly posting in FuseBox hoodies and beanies, celebrating installations and sharing tips with a genuine buzz around the brand. It’s more than consumer units, it’s a community electricians feel part of. That positive energy doesn’t happen by accident. We suspect it comes straight from FuseBox’s contractor-first approach and its motto: making electricians smile.

KEY FEATURES: FuseBox main switch 100A with RCBOS • 100A main switch prepopulated with single-module 1P+N bidirectional RCBOs • Full-length 100A-rated busbar included • 18 modules per row • Generous internal space for ease of installation • Readily removable linked DIN rails • Terminal bars above each DIN rail for easy wiring and testing • Reversible door can be fixed to either side • Robust internal support for enhanced rigidity • Top and bottom removable gland plates • Multiple knockouts on top, bottom, rear and sides • 25sqmm cable included

Click Litehouse introduces elegant Matt Bronze finish to Deco and Deco Plus Collections

MATT BRONZE OFFERS A SUBTLE, UNDERSTATED LUXURY THAT COMPLEMENTS EVERYTHING FROM CONTEMPORARY INDUSTRIAL DESIGNS TO CLASSIC, HERITAGE-INSPIRED INTERIORS…

Following the overwhelming success of the Matt Bronze finish in the Definity range, and in response to growing demand for stylish decorative wiring accessories, Click Litehouse has now expanded this sophisticated finish to its Deco Plus and Deco ranges. FROM UTILITY TO DESIGN FEATURE For decades, wiring accessories such as switches, sockets and outlets were seen purely as functional products - devices that simply needed to work reliably and safely. Today, however, the landscape is shifting. Increasingly, end users, designers and electrical contractors are recognising that these everyday essentials are not just about performance, but also about appearance, feel and how they integrate into the overall design of a space. The traditional white plastic switch may still dominate the market in volume – the Click Mode range of white

moulded wiring accessories remains the company’s best-selling range - but demand for stylish alternatives has grown rapidly. Interior designers, architects and homeowners now view wiring accessories as an integral part of the overall interior design scheme. Matte finishes, metallic tones and screwless faceplates are trending as homeowners

While appearance is becoming increasingly important, performance remains paramount. Installers must continue to ensure compliance with safety standards, ease of installation and reliability. The most successful products are those that deliver both - combining modern aesthetics with robust engineering. A TOUCH OF BRONZE Deco Plus is Click’s premium curved profile decorative wiring accessory range, while Deco offers a high-quality square profile alternative. The new Matt Bronze finish, available with black inserts, enhances the Deco Plus and Deco’s timeless appeal, ideal for both residential and commercial settings. This elegant addition provides electrical contractors with high-end solutions that elevate modern interiors. All switch plates are modular as standard, allowing installers to create any switch plate required. The Click

look for premium finishes that complement modern interiors.

BALANCING AESTHETICS WITH PERFORMANCE

The shift is being driven not only by designers but also by a new generation of consumers who are highly attuned to detail. In an era when social media showcases every corner of a home, people are more aware of the small touches that elevate interior spaces. Wiring accessories, once ignored, now play a role in creating a premium, polished environment.

MEETING THE DEMANDS OF MODERN LIVING The introduction of the Matt Bronze finish across both Deco and Deco Plus could not have come at a better time. As modern living spaces evolve, the demand for products that blend practicality with visual sophistication continues to grow. Homes and commercial environments alike are embracing open-plan layouts, minimalist design cues, and warmer, more organic colour palettes. The Matt Bronze finish fits perfectly within this

trend, offering a subtle, understated luxury that complements everything from contemporary industrial designs to classic, heritage-inspired interiors. CONTINUOUS INNOVATION For Click Litehouse, anticipating trends and setting new standards in wiring accessory design has always been an important focus. Michael Connolly, Sales Director, Precision.

THE CO TYRONE-BASED MANUFACTURER OF HIGH-QUALITY SWITCHGEAR AND AUTOMATED CONTROL SYSTEMS IS PREPARING TO INCREASE ITS WORKFORCE BY 30% OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS... Approaching the future with Precision

With a bold rebrand and strategic growth plan now underway, Co Tyrone- based Precision is accelerating into its next phase of development - backed by strengthened partnerships, global expansion and a commitment to technical excellence. The Dungannon-based manufacturer of high-quality switchgear and automated control systems is preparing to increase its workforce by 30% over the next 12 months as it continues to secure major projects across the UK, Ireland, Europe and the US. A STRATEGIC REBRAND FOR A GLOBAL FUTURE Earlier this year, the company rebranded from Precision Switchgear & Controls to Precision, reflecting a sharpened identity and global outlook. Michael Connolly, Sales Director, says, “The rebrand aligns with our strategy to position Precision as a global technology partner rather than a local supplier.

Dropping Switchgear & Controls is a confident move, but our brand already holds weight in the market. The new ‘P’ower logo strengthens our identity and will be central to future campaigns.” The rebrand follows a year-long Invest NI leadership programme completed by Michael, Managing Director Peter McKearney and General Manager Paul Carolan, establishing a clear roadmap for Precision’s growth, culture and capability development. DEEPENING PARTNERSHIPS ACROSS THE VALUE CHAIN A core feature of Precision’s strategy is its partnership-led approach - both with clients and its supply chain. The business places strong importance on early engagement, technical clarity and aligned delivery throughout the project lifecycle. “We don’t operate as a transactional supplier,” says Michael. “We build long- term partnerships. By engaging early in

the specification and design stage, we help clients select the right, compliant and future-ready solution for their project. Our responsibility is to guide them with technical accuracy, not just provide hardware.” This advisory approach is increasingly valued in mission-critical sectors where reliability, safety and regulatory compliance sit at the forefront. Precision also works closely with its strategic supply chain - including market-leading technology providers - to ensure access to the latest innovation, component availability, training and regulatory updates. This collaboration allows Precision to deliver with speed, consistency and confidence across multiple markets. DELIVERING COMPLIANT, HIGH-PERFORMANCE SOLUTIONS Precision maintains a strong focus on engineering quality, regulatory

compliance and alignment with evolving UK, Irish and European standards. This is particularly essential for the company’s core verticals, including data centres, BESS (battery energy storage), pharmaceuticals, healthcare and major infrastructure. The business supports consultants, contractors and end-users by providing clarity on the correct application of standards such as IEC, BS EN, ENA and G99/G100, ensuring risks are mitigated long before equipment reaches site. MAJOR PROJECTS AT HOME AND INTERNATIONALLY Precision’s growth trajectory has been accelerated by success in high-value, mission-critical markets. One recent milestone includes a Tier III data centre campus in GB, set to become the largest of its kind in Europe. Precision is also supporting key infrastructure investments, including Belfast Grand Central Station - the largest integrated transport hub on the island of Ireland - delivering switchgear and controls with clean interfaces for SCADA, signalling and safety systems. Growth in international markets continues, with the business now supplying advanced solutions to the US oil and gas industry. Exports are

expected to be a significant contributor to future revenue, forming a key component of Precision’s three-year expansion plan. DEVELOPING SKILLS AND EMPLOYMENT IN NORTHERN IRELAND To support its growth, Precision is investing in people development across all levels of the business. The company now employs a diverse team spanning Northern Ireland, Europe, India and Brazil, bringing a valuable blend of skills, cultural

The move to a purpose-built facility in Dungannon in 2020 - equipped with CNC copper fabrication and Perforex technology - enhanced the company’s production capabilities. Accreditations as a CUBIC Modular System Manufacturer and Schneider Electric EcoXpert Panel Builder further strengthened its technical credentials. Precision’s agility and direct-access service model remain distinct differentiators. “Clients value the accessibility they have to our senior leadership,” says Michael. “We support projects from design through to commissioning and pride ourselves on being responsive, proactive and solutions- driven.” Career opportunities at Precision are now live. insight and technical knowledge. Precision has also launched an apprenticeship programme and is

collaborating with Mid Ulster MEGA to promote engineering pathways to young people across the region. “There is a clear industry skills gap,” says Michael. “We want to help develop talent locally and show that this industry provides long-term, progressive careers, with the chance to work on large-scale global projects without leaving Northern Ireland.”

WITH MORE THAN SIX BILLION DEVICES NOW USING THE USB SYSTEM WORLDWIDE, SWITCH ELECTRICAL SOLUTIONS MD PAUL NOONAN OUTLINES THE EVOLUTION OF USB CHARGERS… The journey of USB charging USB A+A: EARLY

THE GAME CHANGER - EU LEGISLATION ON UNIVERSAL CHARGING In 2022, the European Union passed legislation mandating USB-C as the universal standard for cell phones, tablets and other small electronics sold in the EU by 2024. This has driven global adoption even outside Europe as manufacturers standardise production globally. Where is this leading? In short, we are heading toward a world where three-pin plug sockets are no longer necessary for charging personal electronics. The shift is already visible in: • Airports, where high-wattage USB-C is being rolled out in lounges and terminals • Universities and libraries, providing fast charging at every table or seat without trailing cords • Modern offices, where desks, meeting tables, soft seating, breakout areas and training rooms are being fitted with modular, scalable USB-C charging for both phones and laptops • Hotels, trains and public venues, ensuring seamless charging without adapters or power bricks WHAT ABOUT USB-D? WILL THE EVOLUTION CONTINUE? As of 2025, there is no formal public specification or roadmap for a USB-D standard. Industry bodies, including the USB Implementers Forum (USB- IF), are focused on enhancing USB-C performance rather than introducing a new connector form. Given current trajectories, USB-C is likely to dominate the market for at least another 5-10 years with incremental improvements, rather than complete overhauls. Market saturation and regulatory alignment most likely discourage introducing a new physical connector any time soon. OE Electrics products now include USB-C charging capabilities across their

CONVENIENCE, LIMITED POWER In the early 201Os, USB-A charging began to appear in public spaces and furniture, providing a simple and universal method to power cell phones and small devices. These early solutions typically delivered 5W-1 OW of power, sufficient for phones at the time, but inadequate for laptops, tablets and power-hungry accessories. Why change happened: • Consumers needed on-the-go power • Limitation - power output was too low for anything USB A+C: THE TRANSITION PHASE With the rise of newer smartphones, tablets and portable devices using USB-C cables, a transitional port setup emerged: USB-A + USB-C. This setup maintained backward compatibility while introducing faster charging (up to 18-25W) via USB-C. What happened? • Device manufacturers began shipping phones with USB-C ports. Power module manufacturers adapted to support both legacy and modern users Benefit • Mid-level fast-charging for newer phones, with legacy USB-A support for existing users

universal across Android devices and newer Apple products, the next logical step was a dual USB-C port configuration, offering 30W fast charging suitable for nearly all phones, tablets and accessory devices. Why it happened? • The market demanded faster, universal and more sustainable charging solutions Benefit • 3-pin plug usage is rapidly declining in most devices, replaced by modular, USB-C based solutions
