ECA WELCOMES UK GOVERNMENT’S CLEAN ENERGY JOBS PLAN

A new Clean Energy Jobs Plan announced by the UK government has been welcomed by the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) as a positive step towards achieving the nation’s net zero ambitions. The plan includes a target to create more than 6,000 direct jobs by 2030 in Northern Ireland across nuclear fusion, CCUS and GGRs, electricity networks, heat networks and energy efficiency and retrofit. Andrew Eldred, Deputy CEO of ECA, said, “It’s encouraging to see plumbers, HVAC

engineers and electricians acknowledged in the Clean Energy Jobs Plan as priority occupations where a major boost to recruitment and training is now required. “However, ECA is concerned that the Plan has very little to say about how that is going to happen. To date, there has been no sustained UK Government strategic engagement with the engineering services organisations which will be primarily responsible for training and employing this workforce.” ECA is aiming to work more closely with government departments to grow a domestic engineering services workforce trained to industry standards and equipped to deliver an efficient and safe clean energy transition. www.eca.co.uk
