external power and lighting. Mechanical services installed by NUGENT included LTHW heating comprising gas- fired boilers, radiators and radiant panels, and hot and cold domestic water services including CAT 5 install and gas-fired water heaters. Ventilation comprised packaged AHUs, classroom MVHRs and kitchen extract fans, alongside air conditioning, automatic controls and BMS and fume cupboard extraction. Among specialist requirements for the college’s training facilities, meanwhile, were LEV systems for wood dust, welding and vehicle exhaust systems, compressed air, specialist gas and science lab waste. With construction taking place on a live campus site, maintaining safe access for students and staff was a priority throughout the works. Brendan Gildernew, Contract Director, said, “As an MEP contractor, it was rewarding to be part of a new college where plumbing/heating and electrical apprentices will gain practical and theory skills to enter the building services industry. This is a state-of-the-art college with amazing facilities for the students. “Having recently completed NRC Coleraine, this was another successful collaboration working together as a team with Heron Bros to get the project over
the line and delivered on time.” Already reporting a 12% increase in full- time enrolments for the new academic year, the new campus is on track to achieve BREEAM Excellent certification and BIM Level 2 compliance. Dr Caoimhe Archibald, Economy Minister, says, “This impressive new facility will allow Northern Regional College to continue its excellent work in providing the training and skills which underpin my Economic Vision. “The local economy here is supported by a vibrant engineering sector.
