NORTHERN REGIONAL COLLEGE BALLYMENA PROJECT PROFILE

CONFIGURING A FLEXIBLE SYSTEM TO ALLOW FOR FUTURE EXPANSION, METARTEC HAS INSTALLED A REDUNDANT UPS SYSTEM FEATURING TWO 100KW MILLI PT HIGH-EFFICIENCY UNITS… UPS SYSTEM

Following a successful UPS installation at the NRC Coleraine Campus, Metartec was also contracted to equip the NRC Ballymena Campus. The central computer and server room at Ballymena has a parallel redundant UPS system, featuring two 100kW MILLI PT high-efficiency units. A 10-year battery supports the system, connected to the IT network via SNMP, which allows for the orderly shutdown of servers during extended power outages. Additionally, each of the 10 communications rooms is protected by its own rack-mounted, SNMP-enabled UPS. Stephen McCallum, Director at Metartec, says, “Like many projects, the IT equipment to be supported from each comms room was not finalised when the project started. “As the project developed, communication between NUGENT, NRC IT and Metartec was critical to ensure sufficient power capacity and autonomy for mains failures. UPSs are in the background and expected to work, so configuring a flexible system

to allow for future expansion is a key requirement.” Due to limited space in the main computer room, the UPS, batteries and cabling had to be relocated within the room. With Metartec’s input extending beyond installation to the long-term serviceability of equipment, it also considered the fixed requirements of other equipment on site, supplying a UPS system with the maximum service life. “Some of our colleagues had attended the old Ballymena campus, so it was a full-circle moment with the former students keen to have a role in the campus installation,” says Stephen. “Metartec was also the incumbent UPS provider for the old campus IT suite, bringing continuity from the old to the new suite and we ensured ethical disposal and recycling of the old equipment.” A trusted leader in critical power solutions, delivering uninterrupted, reliable power to businesses that cannot afford downtime,

Metartec was founded in 2007. Its senior management team brings over 120 years of combined experience in the power industry, offering unparalleled expertise in designing, implementing and managing mission-critical power infrastructure.
