OPUS Stephen Simpson
Capturing the delicate and intricate nature of flowers, Stephen Simpson’s Opus collection is a testament to everything he has learnt over the past decade. Depicting some of the world’s most beautiful flowers, the series is, in Stephen’s own words, “a contemporary take on a classical subject.” The stunning selection of large-scale canvasses combines his favourite elements from previous works with a newfound style. Each hand-painted in his Middlesbrough studio, Stephen’s mixed media
artworks fuse oil paint, acrylic gel and a high-gloss oil varnish, resulting in mesmerising effects that change appearance in different lights. When we caught up with Stephen to discuss the collection, he told us: "I want people to smile when they see the work. I want them to be happy. I want to evoke an emotional response, like when you receive flowers in real life. Everyone can relate to floral paintings on some level. I think floral art is timeless and will never go out of style."
