SCULPTURE

Who says art has to be 2D? In an article by 21 Oak , 48% of designers said they planned to use sculptures more, and we can definitely see why. This space-saving solution enables collectors to add a focal point to their bookshelf, office desk, coffee table or mantlepiece without losing wall space. In the wider art world, sculpture is thriving. Contemporary African artists like the Ghanian sculptor El Anatsui are using everyday materials like bottle caps to create large-scale installations that raise questions about ethnic identity. The Indian-British sculptor Anish Kapoor will be the first British artist to hold a major exhibition at the Gallerie dell’Accademia during the 59th Venice Biennale, which will run until October 2022.

Sculptures are also taking over Pinterest and Instagram, with searches for ‘Greek statue art’ up by 300%. The new ‘Hellenistic revival’ or return of ‘Greek chic’ has included the renaissance of Greek and Roman style statues and classical busts. This has been showcased on social media by the sharing of candles inspired by ‘Venus de Milo’, a statue created between 130 and 100 BC that depicts Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. If Corinthian home décor isn’t your thing, equestrian sculpture is another timeless trend. From the chariots and Trojan horse of Greek mythology to the shape-shifting kelpie of Scottish folklore, the horse emblem is an elegant way to update a room. This could be through your wallpaper, soft furnishings or a sculpture that fuses this classic form with modern artistic techniques.

 Created in bronze, Steve Winterburn’s incredibly detailed artworks show not only the strength and beauty of animals, but their emotions and soul. As each sculpture is hand-finished and patinated, they are all unique.
