Extension of Pickleball Courts Operating Hours with Monarch Ball

Request of Pickleball Committee

Submitted By: Keith Bassham, Chairman - ORPS Pickleball Committee Date: November 10, 2020

Background: To: Board of Directors - Outdoor Resort Palm Springs RE: Use of the Pickleball Courts until 7 PM, Extension of the current Trial to January 18, 2021

On behalf of the ORPS Pickleball Committee we are requesting an extension of the pickleball trial to January 18, 2021. The current trial for playing with the Monarch ball until 7 PM on Tuesday through Saturday is scheduled to end on New Years Eve 2020. When the ORPS Board of Directors approved the trial in November it immediately became a hit with the Pickleball community for the following reasons: 1. In November, prior to folks heading out for the holidays, the 13 courts were full or nearly full each morning during Open Play. Players were always waiting to get on the courts. The trial enabled players to come in the early evening, use a USAPA sanctioned ball, and spread out on the less crowded courts. 2. Working members of Pickleball families were no longer shut out from playing with the Monarch ball and were able to get on the courts in the late afternoon and early evenings. 3. Renters and owners alike were able to get on the courts with their entire families in the evenings when fewer players are on the courts. 4. As the number of renters and owners who were taking lessons(2 PM - 4 PM) continued to grow, it allowed newer players an opportunity to use the Monarch ball after 4 PM, and work on the skills that they had recently learned. In the past they would have to do this with the soft ball. 5. Due to increasing COVID protocols the Pickleball Committee has tried to maintain four open courts during morning open play so as to keep even more stringent requirements for social-distancing. Some groups have elected to come in the late afternoon, 3 PM to 5 PM, when they have more choices on the courts. This will be harder to do when our numbers increase after the first of the year if we are unable to play with the Monarch ball after 4 PM. 6. At the beginning of this trial the lighting system on the Pickleball courts was not working correctly. As maintenance has just recently completed the necessary repairs, the lights are now working properly. On hot days this enables players to participate in a safe and comfortable environment. When the ORPS Board of Directors decided that 7 PM on Tuesday through Saturday was an adequate extension of the current rule, the Pickleball Committee was in agreement. There is no hidden agenda, no additional hours, and no outside players involved. This request is about adequately using our resources, facilities, and equipment, as well as protecting our players. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at 541-308-6225. Sincerely, Keith Bassham
