The Perception of Sound The most basic descriptions of sound are loudness (amplitude) and pitch (frequency). The frequency range of human hearing is roughly 20 to 20,000 Hz, although most people can not hear this full range because high frequencies are lost as a natural part of aging and other factors such as illness and exposure to high levels of noise that may cause permanent hearing loss.
