THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART NEW YORK For the third year in a row, The Met — as New Yorkers affectionately refer to it — is voted the best museum in the United States and the globe by travelers. It’s one of the best museums in the world, with so much to see that you could spend an entire day there and still not see everything. The Met houses almost two million works of art from all over the world. The outstanding collection of European Paintings and the huge Egyptian art holdings, including the Temple of Dendur from 10 BCE, are unmissable highlights. But don’t dismiss its polished reputation as an enthusiastic collector of all things art, with over 2 million pieces in its collection. Classic and ancient Egyptian art coexists with European paintings and sculptures in one gallery, while artifacts from the Neolithic period to the end of Late Antiquity are presented in another. There are Aboriginal Australian rock drawings, African ceremonial tribal objects, and Buddhist statues on display. American and contemporary art is a historical study in art from the 18th to the 20th centuries. In addition to religious writings and ornamental elements, the museum houses an unrivaled collection of Islamic art. The Met’s eclectic galleries of musical instruments, historical costumes, and ancient weaponry, on the other hand, really sparkle.
