MUSEI VATICANI, ROME The Vatican Museums, the oldest museum series on the list, was founded in 1506 as the foremost Christian art curator. The Pinacoteca Vaticana, Pio-Clementino Museum, Chiaramonti Museum, Gregoriano Etrusco Museum, Gregoriano Egiziano Museum, and Vatican Historical Museum are among the structures that rotate through 70,000 works of art acquired by popes. The Sistine Chapel, which is on the visiting path and has a Michelangelo piece on its ceiling, is another attraction. Raphael’s Madonna of Foligno, Leonardo da Vinci’s St. Jerome in the Wilderness, and Caravaggio’s Entombment are among the works on display. Modern religious painters such as Chagall, Dali, Picasso, and Gauguin have their own galleries, while sculpture museums exhibit Renaissance and Roman statues. The Vatican Historical Museum, on the other hand, deviates from the norm by displaying pictures of Popes dating back to the 16th century. It also holds a collection of Popes’ and Cardinals’ carriages and vehicles.
