RENEWABLE ENERGY TO BENEFIT FROM WINDSOR FRAMEWORK VAT EXEMPTION

The Windsor Framework, a post- Brexit legal agreement between the EU and the UK, will make installing renewable energy and energy- efficient measures for homeowners in Northern Ireland cheaper, thanks to a tax break. VAT exemptions for solar panels and heat pumps that are already in place in the rest of the UK will be extended to NI. This will reduce the average cost of renewables installations by between 5% and 20%, and homeowners could save up to 20%. The lifting of VAT will be a boost to

the green sector in NI, says renewable energy charity MCS Charitable Foundation, which campaigned for the exemption. MCS ‘s Director of External Affairs David Cowdrey commented, “Installing energy efficiency measures and renewables in people’s homes is a boost to the economy by providing skilled green jobs and will help also reduce energy bills. We need to be scaling up the installation of renewables across all housing in NI to tackle the climate emergency and bring down the cost of living permanently.” www.mcscharitytablefoundation.org
