Sustainable heating: What are the options?

SOURCE: MYSON

MYSON OFFERS HIGH-QUALITY UNDERFLOOR HEATING AND RADIATORS FOR LOW TEMPERATURE HEATING SYSTEMS SUITABLE FOR A WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS SUCH AS PRIVATE HOUSING, SCHOOLS AND OFFICES…

I f we want to reduce energy use, costs and greenhouse gas emissions, we not only need to make our new buildings as green as possible, but we also need to upgrade our existing housing stock. Fortunately, we can rely on advanced technologies such as heat pumps, solar systems and high-efficiency boilers to make our buildings more energy-efficient. Since these technologies work with low system temperatures, it’s key to combine them with a compatible heating system and, contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t always have to be underfloor heating. ENERGY GRANTS To motivate Irish homeowners to upgrade their homes with energy efficiency measures the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland administers grants for energy-saving solutions. Logically, these include attic and wall insulation since a thorough insulation significantly reduces a building’s energy demand. On top of that, grants are awarded for a heating controls upgrade, solar thermal solutions and heat pump

systems, which makes a perfect addition to the insulation because well-insulated buildings are generally heated with low temperature heating systems in order to further reduce energy consumption. UNDERFLOOR HEATING Underfloor heating is top of mind when it comes to low temperature heating systems. Especially because it allows for the lowest flow temperatures to be achieved and therefore makes a perfect pair with a heat pump. Since underfloor heating typically operates at a temperature of below 40°C, the heat pump is able to work at maximum efficiency and thus reduce energy use and heating costs to a minimum. IMPROVED DESIGN Typically radiators aren’t associated with low temperature systems, but they have been continuously optimised over the past decades. By increasing the heating surface and making other design changes, such as moving the convection plates to the hot water channels, it has been possible to increase the heating

capacity, so that modern radiators now work perfectly even at low system temperatures and therefore contribute to the energy efficiency of the heating system. ALTERNATIVE No matter how well underfloor heating works with low temperatures, it’s not always possible to install this kind of heating system. Luckily, owners of well- insulated and modern buildings can rely on alternatives such as radiators and convectors to help optimise their energy use. Especially because changing external and internal heat sources such as solar radiation and electrical appliances have an increasing impact on the indoor climate when the insulation is improved, and the fast reaction times of thermostatically controlled radiators allow users to respond quickly to the heat sources’ influence.
