Although an ideal grid is often not feasible, due to waterways, homes, and other barriers, flexible application of network spacing guidelines forms a foundation for an effective thoroughfare plan. Expanding roadway capacity through the addition of new lanes may temporarily ease congestion, but additional efforts are needed to improve throughput, like more connections and alternative routes, and improved transit frequency on designated routes supported by mobility hubs in suburban areas.
