MUSIC SUMMARY
for students to share their musical talents and dance into the day.
A particular highlight of the year was the Junior School Foundation Schools Orchestra Day which was hosted here at Dulwich College for the first time. This event brought together over 100 children from the orchestras at our three Foundation Schools to participate in a day of orchestral music-making. Students had the opportunity to work with professional musicians, participate in sectional and full rehearsals, and perform in a grand concert at the end of the day. The event was a resounding success, highlighting the collaborative spirit and musical prowess of our young musicians. This year, we have seen the introduction of a concert called ‘Breakfast Beats’ for all our wonderful drumkit players. Held in the morning before school, pupils and parents gather together for pastries and coffee before having the chance to hear a variety of songs played on the drumkit. This initiative has been met with great enthusiasm, providing a relaxed and enjoyable setting
n Music has continued to be a central part of life at the Junior School. It has been a hugely successful year full of fantastic music-making both for individuals and in various ensembles, with many opportunities for the pupils to showcase their dedication and talent. The ‘Pop in and Play’ concerts and Open Concerts are a staple of the music program at Dulwich College Junior School. These informal concerts provide students with the opportunity to perform in front of their peers, parents, and teachers, fostering a supportive environment for budding musicians. This year, these concerts saw an increase in participation, with performances ranging from classical pieces to contemporary hits, demonstrating the versatility and enthusiasm of our students. We have also had fantastic performances from the Junior School Rock Band, ‘Rock Solid’, at College of Rock and on the Rising Stars Stage at Founder’s Day.
The school’s annual productions continue to be a highlight of the academic year. This year, we were treated to ‘Rock Pool’ from Year 3, ‘Straw and Order’ from Year 4, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ from Year 5 (Play in 2 days) and ‘Finding Nemo’ from Year 6. All the children captivated audiences with their lively performances and joyous singing. The Junior School Madrigal Choir have participated in two events in prestigious venues this year. The Winter Concert at Cadogan Hall saw beautiful renditions of four folksongs arranged by our Head of Singing, Mr Dan Ludford-Thomas, and the Choral Concert at Southwark Cathedral gave them the opportunity to perform the epic ‘Dream of Gerontius’ by Edward Elgar. The choir also sang with great energy at this year’s Founder’s Day celebrations.
