FINISHING SHOTS By Tom Gray

THE INVINCIBLE EAGLE: On June 21, 1980, the ill-fated Salvador Sanchez made the second defense of his Ring Magazine and WBC featherweight titles against the man he’d dethroned, Danny “Little Red” Lopez, at the Caesars Palace Sports Pavilion in Las Vegas. Once again, Sanchez was superior, with his left jab setting up some eye-popping combination work and his defensive finesse limiting the challenger’s success. When yet another devastating series of punches from the Mexican hero nailed Lopez in Round 14, referee Mills Lane stopped the fight immediately. Sanchez made seven more successful defenses over the next two years, defeating the likes of Ruben Castillo, Juan LaPorte, Wilfredo Gomez and Azumah Nelson along the way. He died tragically in an automobile accident on August 12, 1982.
