During an emergency, Broward County activates the Special Needs Shelter, which offers basic medical assistance and monitoring. Shelters are staffed by qualified medical personnel and have back-up electricity for limited lighting, air conditioning and essential medical equipment. Family members and caregivers are encouraged to accompany you. Shelters should ONLY be used as a back-up to your personal sheltering plan. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

Once enrolled, individuals will be issued a Sunrise Police Autism Awareness magnet and sticker that can be placed on cars, windows, and doors to alert any responding officer that an individual with autism may be present. Individuals will also be issued a laminated card with pertinent information they can hand to an officer in the case of any interaction.

Designed for individuals with autism, special needs, Alzheimer’s and dementia, these devices include an AI- powered monitoring and alerting system, an app for multiple caregivers and a device of your choice, with an auto-pickup speakerphone, and live GPS tracking capabilities that can be shared with first responders.
