penitentiary recently. In both places the Lord blessed His Gospel, and many boys and men professed to accept Christ. Jewish Work There was a goodly gathering of Jewish converts and friends at the monthly meet ing and the heart of our leader, Mrs. Man- son, was encouraged by the conversion of a husband of one of the converts. He came to the meeting a stranger to the Messiah and went away rejoicing in Him as his Saviour and Lord. There were a number of interesting testimonies and the spirit of devotion was very enjoyable. The Extension Work Mr. George W. Hunter reports good classes in the north. A new field has been opened which will eventuate in the form ing a church. He has resumed his class in San Quentin and the men rallied in large numbers for the first meeting. This is one of the most fruitful fields for service we know of and we anticipate large results from the class. Mr. Chester White has had splendid success in introducing the Scofield Course to the people in several parts of the State and has also been able to interest a number of young people in the Institute class work. We are having more calls for workers and teachers than we can supply. The classes held in different sections of the city and in the adjoining towns are all commanding the blessing of our Lord. The New Building Work on the new building progresses satisfactorily. The great lot, 240x165, has finally yielded up its forty thousand yards of dirt and the foundation walls and super structure are beginning to give some evi dence of the largeness of the work. The examinations at the close of the Winter Term showed that the students are doing very satisfactory work and that the standard is steadily rising. The week of vacation between terms was very much appreciated by the students, some of whom paid a visit to “the old folks at home.” 'Those who remained in the city arranged several pleasant outings, which proved helpful physically, mentally, and spiritually. The Spring Term opened on Monday, April 7th, with nearly all the old students in their places, and with ten or twelve new friends. Some changes in the teaching force have been made necessary by the increasing de mands of the general work of the Insti tute. “The King’s Business” now claims so much of Mr. Sammis’ time, and the Bible Women’s work claiming all of Miss Hig gins’ time, they have had to be excused from the class room. They will both be missed, but the students will not suffer for lack of work, for Dr. Torrey is taking one of the vacant periods for studies in the Book of Acts, and Mr. Hunter will carry on the study of Home and Foreign Missions. An illustrated lecture on “The Land of Palestine” is being arranged for during May, to be given by Dr. McKnight, pastor of the_ First Christian Church, Pasadena, who recently visited the Holy Land and se cured a number of fine photographs, from which he has had stereopticon slides made. Mrs. Horton writes of her delightful trip to and rest in Honolulu. She is expected to reach home about April 25th. Mr. Horton paid a visit to the Whittier School for Boys and also to San Quentin
