FINISHING SHOTS By Tom Gray
FIFTEEN WITH FOSTER: On April 1, 1972, Muhammad Ali ventured to Tokyo for his first of six fights that calendar year. The opponent was a Marine named Mac Foster, an authentic knockout artist who had never been the distance in 29 fights and had only suffered one professional setback to Jerry Quarry. Ali was largely dominant over the course of the 15-round non-title bout but couldn’t find the finish. In the first heavyweight match ever staged in the Far East, “The Greatest” settled for a lopsided unanimous decision at the Nippon Budokan arena.
