Dementia Diagnoses Are Never Easy But Accepting Change Can Help Immensely

Once you accept the changes in your life, you can begin taking steps toward a resolution.

we heavily focus on is our Alzheimer’s care navigation services. We understand how difficult it can be to deal with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis or care for a loved one with the disease — it can feel like you’re backed into a corner with no one to guide you. But when you are equipped with tools, guidance, and support, you’ll be able to overcome obstacles because you’re prepared. And that is one of the main things my team and I want to do for you. As Alzheimer’s diagnoses remains prevalent, we will continue to further our education and share our insight with you. Today, the disease is clouded with uncertainty, false information, and a lack of resources. However, my team and I are determined to change that and provide you with the tools you need to continue to move forward. One question I frequently hear about Alzheimer’s that I want to address is, “How do I keep my loved one home as long as possible?” To me, the No. 1 thing you must recognize is that everything will change. If you want your loved one to remain home, you may have to modify your daily schedules and routines, make a lifestyle change with your career or retirement, or adjust your finances, legal documents, and other planning materials. When you or a loved one is experiencing a dementia diagnosis, the only way to adjust and move forward is to alter your perspective according to the circumstances.

When you think about time, you may consider it as something that tells you where you’re at throughout the day — when your next meeting, appointment, or activity is. However, time can also be a reminder; that at some point, we run out of time on this planet. Because of this, the time we still have can encourage us to embrace change, cherish the moments we spend with our loved ones, and take on every day with our best foot forward.

The other frequently asked question I receive is, “How do I care for a loved one with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis?”

Unfortunately, I don’t have a one-size-fits- all answer regarding this question because everyone’s situation is different. However, I can provide further insight after talking to you about your circumstances and concerns. So please, don’t hesitate to contact me if you or someone you know is caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia. I would love to ease your stress and point you in the right direction! While things may get complicated with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, you still have time to prepare and connect with your loved ones — the clock hasn’t stopped yet!

And if you have a loved one who is enduring a dementia diagnosis, it’s vital that you take this time to comfort, support, and prepare yourself and your loved one for what’s to come. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, over 6 million Americans are living with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. And by 2050, this number is estimated to rise to over 13 million. Because Alzheimer’s diagnoses are constantly increasing and families will continue to look for resources and guidance, it is my utmost priority to help you and your family navigate through this journey. The rest of the team and I will walk alongside you as you take on different life experiences. A Poppin’ Night at the Drive-In

Do you remember the days of packing up snacks, hopping in the car, and heading out for an evening under the stars at the drive-in? Every year on June 6, we celebrate Drive-In Movie Day. Although movie-going has seen some modifications over the last few decades, drive-in movie theaters are still around and continue to draw a crowd! If you’re interested in reliving some of your best memories and watching a movie at your local drive-in, here are some tips to make the most of the evening. Pack the snacks. Most drive-in theaters have maintained the look and feel of the retro movie experience, so you may need to bring your own munchies and refreshments. So, before you go, pop the popcorn and refrigerate your soda. If you’re bringing your kids or grandchildren, you may want to pack some extra M&M’s and gummy bears along with their favorite juice box! Pocket some cash. For drive-ins with a concession stand, be sure you have cash on hand, just in case they do not accept cards. Before your movie, you can always call ahead to get the scoop on whether or not they have a concession stand and the rules and options. Dress appropriately. The temperatures can get a bit chilly depending on where you live, and the bugs may be on the loose! Long pants and sweatshirts are a great option to stay comfortable, warm, and protected from the bugs. Tote along some chairs . If you’re with a large group of people, or your car feels a bit cramped, take the party outside: Set up a viewing area with some foldable chairs right around your car. If you have a truck, you can back into the parking spot and put chairs in the truck bed, too! When you arrive prepared, the drive-in is a fun activity all ages and generations can appreciate. As always, ensure you get there early to enjoy the previews, too — many argue it’s the best part of the entire experience!

3 Ways to Promote Kindness and Gratitude Sometimes, we seem to be maneuvering through life at 100 miles an hour! We are constantly out and about while running errands, accomplishing goals, spending time with loved ones, and eagerly anticipating the next thing to come. When you’re laser-focused on what you’re doing in your life, you can lose sight of what you’re grateful for. And when you lose touch with gratitude, it can be challenging to share and spread kindness to others.

Here are three strategies to promote kindness in your daily life.

Keep a gratitude journal. At the start or end of each day, take at least 10 minutes to reflect on your experiences and write down a few things you’re grateful for in a notebook or journal. By doing this, you can gain a new perspective on life, which will encourage you to practice gratitude and kindness. Understanding the amazing opportunities, people, and experiences in our lives makes it easier to share love and compassion with others.

Acknowledge others — including strangers! Since most of our time is spent interacting through

smartphones and other devices, finding time for face-to- face interaction can be difficult. But acknowledging others with a smile, opening the door for them, assisting them if they dropped or are looking for something, or simply asking how they are can make such a difference in their lives. Additionally, when you come from a place of giving rather than receiving, it can boost your mood and overall mental health. Complete volunteer work. One of the best ways to spread kindness is by giving back to your community. You can help those around you in many ways, whether volunteering at an animal shelter, assisting people during donation drives and fundraisers, or removing trash from our environment. The possibilities are endless! If you want to learn more about opportunities to give back in your area and surrounding cities, visit VolunteerMatch.org for more information. How do you practice gratitude and kindness in your daily life? We would love to hear from you!

A Furry Hero in Mexico

How the World Fell for Frida Rescue Dog’s Legacy Lives On

America, aka Chris Evans, gave Frida a shoutout on Twitter, adding, “What did we do to deserve dogs?”

Dressed in protective goggles, blue booties, and a matching vest, this incredible

rescue dog became a symbol of hope in Mexico. Frida, a cheerful yellow Labrador retriever, was a devoted member of the Mexican Navy known for her search and rescue skills. Trained to find people trapped under rubble after earthquakes, Frida always worked hard to save lives. Frida became a national hero when a devastating earthquake hit Mexico City in 2017. The 7.1 magnitude earthquake took more than 300 lives and injured many more. While sifting through dangerous debris and aftershocks, Frida saved 12 people after finding them alive while uncovering more than 40 bodies during her lifesaving career. While the nation was devastated by the disaster, this smiley rescue pup brought worldwide attention to the tragedy. Frida’s dedication (and impeccable style) quickly made her an internet celebrity, and soon, murals of the lifesaving canine graced the walls of Mexico City. Even Captain

The hero dog then traveled the world, helping countries suffering from the aftermath of disastrous earthquakes. Frida saved lives in Haiti and Ecuador before retiring from her position in 2019 at 10 years old to live the rest of her days in comfort and love. Sadly, the Mexican Navy announced Frida’s passing in November 2022 due to old age. She was 13 years old.

In her honor, a magnificent bronze statue of Frida, clad in goggles and boots, stands in front of the Mexican Navy office in Mexico City. On the day of her death, the Mexican Navy changed their Twitter banner to an illustration of Frida and spread the hashtag “#HastaSiempreFrida.” Frida will always be remembered for her lifesaving work and the hope she embodied for the entire world.
