ORTHODONTICS WITH A PURPOSE HOW SPECIALIZED DENTAL CARE IS SHAPING OUR LITTLE COMMUNITY

We like to think of things a little differently here at Marshall Orthodontics. Since 2016, we’ve worked to bring everyone in the community together through newfound confidence in their smiles. A lot of good things can start with a smile, from a chance encounter on the street with a lost love to a new burst of self-esteem that can carry you through a tough time. It may seem a little philosophical for a small business like ours, but these ideas give our work purpose and allow us to give the best possible care to our group of dedicated patients — most of whom we’ve grown to call friends. Whatever you’re struggling with, we’ve found that the key to happiness for a lot of our patients is the confidence gained from a great smile.

even help them more than they knew. From my childhood through my teen years and up until college, I bounced around from interest to interest until my dad finally suggested looking into the field of orthodontics. So, I did just that. Now, here we are; I’ve been practicing in my field for nearly seven years and couldn’t be happier with the team of dedicated professionals I’ve surrounded myself with. When I worked my way up to opening my own practice right here in Simpsonville, I knew I wanted to lend deeper meaning to what we do here. That’s why I took the time to implement our mission statement and work hard to live by it every day. It seems simple enough, but I think having

smile and into realms of self-love and real confidence. That’s why our staff is dedicated to displaying our values and giving you the highest quality of care. We want to help you take care of your basic health so that every component of your health falls into its rightful place. Our mission is simple: In everything we do, our purpose is to positively impact and transform the lives of our patients. We are able to fulfill this in two simple ways: creating beautiful smiles that make people feel great about themselves and building others up at every opportunity. Our ultimate service is to provide individualized care to patients of all ages by providing top-notch braces, Invisalign, early age treatments, and surgical procedures. “Since 2016, we’ve worked to bring everyone in the community together through newfound confidence in their smiles.”

Personally, my journey in orthodontics wasn’t always set in stone. However, no matter what I wanted to do at any given time, one thing has remained a constant in my life: It wasn’t going to be about the money. Whatever I chose to do, I wanted it to be a real service to people that would help them in a very practical way — maybe

a solid standard that you live by helps put even the most mundane of tasks into the right perspective. For instance, I knew our office should naturally revolve around fulfilling a very human need, like giving patients the best ortho care possible, but I also knew that I wanted to make people’s lives better in general , going beyond the

Learning to read opens up a world of possibilities. When your child walks through the back of the wardrobe into Narnia with Lucy Pevensie or rides with Harry Potter on the train to Hogwarts, they connect to something beyond their own experiences. In the U.S., April 23 is World Book Day, and the date commemorates the deaths of legendary authors Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as the birth of author Vladimir Nabokov. World Book Day is the perfect time to sit down with your family and let yourself be transported to new worlds. So, here are three great stories to help you take young readers on brand-new adventures. WORLDS WITHIN PAGES BOOKS TO ENGAGE THE WHOLE FAMILY FOR THE ELEMENTARY READER: ‘SONG OF THE WILD: A FIRST BOOK OF ANIMALS’ “Song of the Wild” makes a great read-aloud book for beginner readers because they can get lost in the beautiful artwork while

you read the text. Written in prose and rhyming poems, this book showcases sprawling landscapes — savannahs, jungles, and oceans — and features the wildlife living there. It’s worth a read simply to appreciate the colorful depictions of each animal. This book was written by Nicola Davies and illustrated by Petr Horácek. FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOLER: ‘THE NIGHT DIARY’ 12-year-old Nisha navigates her world after the partition of India creates the new country of Pakistan and her family is forced to leave their home. Her mother may be gone, but Nisha finds solace in writing nightly letters to her in her diary as she discovers what the future holds. Based on author Veera Hiranandani’s memories of her own family, this moving tale lets readers experience life through someone else’s eyes. FOR TEENS: ‘BRAZEN: REBEL LADIES WHO ROCKED THE WORLD’ While some might not think of comics as proper reading, Penelope Bagieu’s graphic novel forces reconsideration. Her clever, colorful artwork and engaging narrative take the reader through the biographies of 30 women, from Bette Davis and Mae Jemison to lesser-known but equally intriguing ladies like Giorgina Reid. All in all, this book provides a great way to get kids excited about history in an entertaining form.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: BREE A RAY OF POSITIVITY IN OUR OFFICE AND BEYOND

At Marshall Orthodontics, we take pride in the tightknit group that makes up our little family here. With only 10 employees, it’s easy to see why we appreciate each other so much. Everybody must rely on everybody in order to make the whole operation run so smoothly. Frankly, without our employees, none of this would be possible — and that’s why we want to start highlighting them in our newsletter! This month, we’re featuring Bree. After serving as an orthodontic assistant in the surrounding area for the past five years, Bree quickly became a light in our office as soon as she joined the Marshall Orthodontics team. She celebrated her one-year “workiversary” recently, and in celebrating her influence here, we were reminded of how her go-getter attitude is such a valuable asset to us. Bree is a lift and a comfort to everybody who has the pleasure of being around her. Giving the gift of confidence is something special to her, and she says that’s one reason why she comes in every day. After having her own struggles with confidence issues in her life, it means a great deal to her to be able to give that feeling to another person.

You never know how much that person is going to need it or how drastically it could turn a life around. This is why she’s chosen to make her career in our industry. After moving to our neck of the woods in 1995 from San Diego, she settled in and quickly became a part of our community. When it came time to look for something bigger with her secondary education, she fell into the field of orthodontics on a whim and never looked back. She credits that as one of the most important choices of her life. Today, she is not only a huge part of what makes our office a family but also a huge part of the lives of everyone who knows her, having touched the hearts of her many friends and family with her heartfelt and caring demeanor. When Bree’s not in the office, she’s busy being a single mother to her young son, Hayes. From dancing to playing sports together, she spends as much time as she can making sure her little boy grows up right — with some laughs along the way. While it’s not always easy to find a balance between work and her other passions, like hula hooping and enjoying the great outdoors, she finds a way to devote herself to every passion in her life. We’re very thankful for that, and for her.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN HALF A DECADE OF RUNNING THE COOPER RIVER BRIDGE RUN

When I’m not seeing my patients through to their perfect smile in the office, I’m busy putting a smile on my face by doing the things I love most. One of those passions has always been running. The euphoria after a big race, the brisk morning air on my face to start my day, and the feeling of self-love I get from staying fit — there’s really nothing like a good run to get my mind right. I’ve found that professional life goals are something I must work hard to achieve, but I’ve also found personal life goals to be just as important. That’s why I ran the Cooper River Bridge Run earlier this month for the fifth straight year — my ultimate goal being to beat my time of 47 minutes from last year, which wasn’t half bad. The pride I feel when I’ve achieved a difficult objective is hard to beat, and it doesn’t hurt that I can burn away some of my cheat days while I’m at it. The nice thing about running a 10k is that while it’s a fairly long race, I’m not worried about blowing my knees out in the process, which I would be with a marathon. It’s in a perfect sweet spot. I have plenty of time to get loose in the early stages and keep up my pace to the very end. As an added bonus, the run is just long enough to produce those legendary runner’s endorphins, which help push me along to the end. For me, it’s all about getting better every year, whether professionally in the office or personally in my free time. Having something tangible to work toward can keep us young and full of life. That’s how I make running work for me. When I’m having a bad day or need to clear my head, going out for a jog helps to get my mind in the right place again while giving me some much- needed alone time. Physical health is widely known to boost mental health, and now, after half a decade of partaking in this wonderful event, I know from my own experience that it’s true. I’d just like to give a big thanks to the volunteers and sponsors who made this year’s event possible, because when I finally saw my name listed on that placement board, I saw all my hard work come to fruition. Here’s to longer runs and brighter smiles, from your friends at Marshall Orthodontics.

3 Travel Myths Debunked

PARIS ON A BUDGET? 3 TRAVEL MYTHS YOU SHOULD STOP BELIEVING

MYTH: TRAVELING IS DANGEROUS. FACT: If you’re smart about what you do and where you go, traveling can be safe. Go with your gut and only stay somewhere that is approved by travel guides. Visit places you feel comfortable in, and do your research by reading travel blogs, websites, and books to find places that have been vetted by others. Traveling in groups can also be a great way to lower your risk of danger. As long as you plan ahead, you will have a safe trip. MYTH: JET LAG IS CAUSED BY A LACK OF SLEEP. FACT: While jet lag can make you sleepy, it’s actually caused by a disruption in your circadian rhythm. Our bodies are cyclical, and the circadian rhythm is set by both a natural need for your body to reset and outside forces, such as your job, time zone, and diet. Travel can disrupt this rhythm and routine, which leaves you lethargic during and after your vacation. Sticking to water before and during your flights and staying physically active during and after traveling are great ways to fight jet lag and get back into your normal rhythm. Don’t let these travel myths keep you from seeing the world. Set a budget, go with your gut, and prepare for a shifting rhythm to make your next adventure the best one yet.

Traveling has many social and educational benefits, but some people have hesitations that prevent them from jetting off on new adventures. Below are three debunked travel myths to give you some ease as you plan your summer vacation!

MYTH: VACATIONS ARE EXPENSIVE. FACT: You can travel anywhere on a

budget. Tracking flights to score the best deal, setting spending limits, and packing meals are a few ways to save money. Hostels and

Airbnbs are great alternatives to spendy hotel stays. Additionally, you don’t have to cross the country to have a great trip. Every state has museums, unique

roadside attractions, historical sites, and a booming nightlife.

When you know your price limits and what you want to do, traveling can be a fun and inexpensive venture.
