Tyoga Container: Growing With The Flow, Going Beyond BY LEN PRAZYCH Speaking to the “grow or die” philosophy espoused by Charlie Frysing- er, President and co-majority owner (with his wife Sharon and minority owners, Sharon’s two cousins, Mike and Mark Ruvolo) of Tioga, Penn- sylvania based Tyoga Container in the feature article published in Board Converting News back in 2018, Frysinger opted for the path of growth over that of death. Wise choice.

MRP has acquired Everett’s Woodland, California packaging and laminating assets and entered into a long-term supply agree- ment with the company, which will enhance MRP’s capabilities while accelerating Ever- ett’s growth initiatives. MRP is a portfolio company of Mill Rock Capital, a growth and operations-oriented pri- vate investment firm. Eight years ago, growth meant a $10 million investment that includ- ed the purchase of a Hycorr 4-color Rotary Die Cutter and an Isowa Ibis, a 50-inch by 120-inch 4-color flexo folder gluer to significantly in- crease volume and the ability to add some color to its otherwise mono- chromatic (brown) box offerings. Last year, growth meant acquiring three pieces of property adjacent to the land on which Tyoga’s then 120,000-square-foot facility sat; adding a 90,000-square-foot structure and filling it with offices and administrative space, brand new convert- ing equipment, and nearly “a mile” of conveyorization; and opening a nearby 130,000-square-foot warehouse in which the company’s fin- ished goods are stored. “We’re now able to do virtually anything and everything,” says Frysinger proudly, adding that with its investment of more than $30 million in this most recent expansion, Tyoga now has the capacity to CONTINUED ON PAGE 26 Charlie Frysinger, President and Co-Owner of Tyoga Container, right, with Chris Morral, Operations Manager, with one of the company’s three new Macarbox machines on the production floor of Tyoga’s newly expanded fa- cility in Tioga, Pennsylvania.

enhanced fatigue resistance, and reduced deflection under load, this iteration reveals a complete reimagining aimed at elevating die-cutting operations. “We are thrilled to introduce the SUN625 Heavy Duty Die Cutter, a significant leap forward in advancing our customers’ die-cutting operations,” says Eric Aulton, Product Manager for the SUN625. “Over the years, we have made small improvements to our design, such as improved forged journal design, register drive re-loca- tion, and structural rigidity, but the new iteration of our heavy-duty die cutter is poised to elevate our customers’ capabilities to much greater heights.” The SUN625HD offers robust die-cut nip assembly. With a 300 percent improvement in load capacity over previous models, the new design delivers a significant in- crease in production efficiency. Fatigue resistance sees a 500 percent improvement and a 60 percent reduction in deflection under load, ensuring precision and quality in every cut. Additionally, journal sizing has more than doubled any other offering in the 66” machine category. SUN’s patent-pending nip position and larger diameter anvil cylinder allow for the smooth operation of corrugat- ed board die cutting on the toughest of conditions, such as heavy-weight paper and double wall, and for full-width multi-up/out applications such as protein and agriculture packaging.

Group remains dedicated to excellence, innovation, and, above all, the success of our customers.” These new innovations and continuous efforts to refine SUN’s corrugated machinery align with SUN’s commitment to best serve its customers. SUN strives to understand the distinct needs and considerations of all operations. With the increased challenges within the die-cutting market, SUN is devoted to staying ahead of the curve in providing custom- ers with the tools to advance their operations and meet their customer needs.

ICPF, MI, NAM To Offer Inside Look At Modern Manufacturing On MFG Day

On October 4, the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF), the National Association of Manufacturers and the Manufacturing Institute, the workforce development and education affiliate of the NAM, will celebrate Manufacturing Day, also known as MFG Day. MFG Day is a national grassroots movement that demonstrates the reality and future of modern manufacturing careers by encouraging thousands of companies and educational institutions nationwide to open their doors to students, parents, educators, and community leaders, fos- tering an in-depth understanding of the rewarding and high-paying ca- reers available in modern manufacturing.

MFG Day launches annually on the first Friday of October, with events throughout the month and beyond. As an initiative of the MI, MFG Day empowers manufacturers to come together and address their collective challenges and build excitement about manufacturing careers to help their communities and future generations thrive. With hundreds of thou- sands of jobs available in the manufacturing sector, the need to connect communities across the United States with these opportunities has nev- er been greater. “National MFG Day puts the spotlight on modern manufacturing, allowing us to change the narrative and perception about the careers available today,” said Carolyn Lee. “Too many people are unaware of the incredible opportunities for meaningful, well-paying careers in this innovative industry. This is only the beginning. That’s why we’re working year-round to engage the future of our workforce — America’s students and young people — to show them what’s available today in their own backyards.” Caitlin Salaverria, President of ICPF, echoed the importance of this initiative. “The corrugated packaging industry employs over 100,000 people at over 1,100 corrugated manufacturing and design facilities across the U.S.,” she said. “Few industries match the exciting challenges, diverse career paths and tremendous advancement potential that corru- gated packaging offers. We are proud to be an official sponsor of MFG Day 2024 and encourage our industry partners to take part in this initia- CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

In addition to a competitive salary and benefit package, the massive expansion included a new break room, complete with fresh options for food and beverages in a market café. In addition, all the restrooms in the facility are new or completely renovated; hourly em- ployees have access to all the same facilities as salaried workers and managers. Then, of course, there is benefit – and pleasure – of working on brand new or almost new equipment in a state-of-the-art facility. Growing With The Flow “The Isowa and the Hycorr were the two anchors we knew we needed to get to where we wanted to get long- term, but we knew we needed to change the overall flow of the plant to remove the bottlenecks that occurred by putting in one new piece of machinery at a time,” Frysinger says. “In modern box plants it’s all about flow and that’s

what we were looking to achieve.” To that end, Frysinger reached out to Todd Vanden- berg of Mainline Conveyors, who helped create plans to layout and engineer the reconfiguration of Tyoga’s new ‘footprint.’ “Todd is not just a salesman, he’s a brilliant engineer,” says Frysinger. “We gave him the templates and specs for the equipment we were adding and he provided options as to how we could ‘flow’ things through the plant. He knew how the equipment would run, at what speeds they would run and especially, how effective it would be for us to receive raw materials at the south end of the facility and ship finished goods out of the north end. It was all about flow. Todd and Mainline were fantastic.” A Triple Investment In Macarbox Critical to the implementation of the expansion was knowing all about the three new machine purchases at the heart of the expansion, all three of them from Macar- box, the Spanish manufacturer of corrugated and convert- ing machinery that has achieved recognition for hundreds of global installations and who is now building a growing presence in the North American market.
