THE WHY AND HOW OF PRAYER Definition: “ Prayer is the offering up of our sincere desires to God for things agreeable to His will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins and thankful acknowledgement of His mercies.” Why Important? 1. Commanded by Christ.—Matt. 6:5, 6 (Example Mark 1:35). 2. A means of grace.-|§Matt. 26:41; Eph. 6:18; Rom. 12:12. 3. Advances God’s work. — Eph. 6:19; Col. 4:3. How To Pray:B-Matt. 6:9-13. 1. As children— “ Our Father.” . 2. As worshippers — “Hallowed be Thy Name.” 3. As subjects "Thy kingdom come.” 4. As servants— “ Thy will be done.”1 5. As dependents—-“ Give us.” 6. As debtors— “ Forgive us.” ' 7. As defenseless— “ Lead us not.” Nehemiah’s Prayer (Neh. 1:5-11). He gave God adoration and praise, con­ fessed sins, plead promises and im­ portuned. Publican’s Prayer (Luke 18:13). He was sincere, humble,. earnest, personal, brief and gave God reverence. Characteristics of Acceptable Prayer: 1. Faith—Mark 11:24; Jas. 1:5, 7; John 5:14, 15. 2.
