HE importance of this subject cannot be overestimated in a day like this when there is a tendency all round to give up

the truth of the atonement, especially in the light of the teaching of the Holy Scriptures; “ It is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul” (Lev. 17:11), and “Without shedding of blood is no remission” (Heb. 9:22). It is helpful to note in Leviticus 16, where we have recorded particulars of the day of atonement, how frequently the blood is named in connection with offerings. On referring to Hebrews 9, the blood has a most prominent place, its meaning and value being empha sized. The fact is, this subject runs like a scarlet line from the Book of Genesis to the Book of Revelation. Its worth and efficacy none but God can fully estimate. We can understand and appreciate it just as far as we have light from God. From the Old, Testament teaching we learn that the blood represents life. (See Gen. 9:4; Lev. 17:11, 14.) Thé first intimation of blood-shedding is found in Genesis 3:21, where we learn that, “ God made coats of skins and clothed them” (Adam and Eve). This suggests the death of beasts to provide the skins, and thus becomes a type of a blessed truth set forth in the New Testament, where we read, “ The righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe,” based on the redemptiqn work of the blessed Saviour, whom God had set forth a propitiation through faith in His
