government officials in Israel. But he recognizes, as do they, that there are many problems facing a real en counter between Ch ristians and Jews. There is no use in ignoring the long history of persecution on the part of the church, a story which every Jewish intellectual can recite in detail. On the other hand, Jews do appreciate a genuine effort to un derstand them and their religion. The recent decision o f the Vatican Council regarding Jewish guilt con cerning the death of Jesus has been of some satisfaction to the Jews, but not entirely. Of course the whole question of Jesus is prominent in the process of dialogue. It is here, along with the authenticity of the New Testament as a genuine revela tion from God, that the conversation comes to an impasse, and it is so recognized by many on both sides. The question of the Messiah comes again to the foreground in Jewish thinking with the taking of the Old City by Israel, which, of course, oc curred after this book was written. This adds to its timeliness. Mr. Schneider offers no easy answers, but he does examine the questions thoroughly. — 196 pages, paper, Sea- bury Press, New York; $1.95.
