OUI JA BOARDS

O UIJA boards became very popular after World War I. Soon after the war an editor wrote that they would be the most popular of all Christmas gifts that year. Chris tians need to be warned about this evil device, because it is back in vogue again. A recent report stated that more than a million and a half have been sold in the United States during the past year, and this with out advertising. The Encyclopedia Americana takes the usual “ scientific” position that the phenomenon of the ouija board is the result of “ unconscious muscu lar movements” on the part of the participants, but it adds that if the phenomenon is accomplished through the claims made for the board, then it would seem necessary to postulate that it is through extra sensory per ception on the part of a participant. (Extra sensory perception has so far defied a scientific explanation. Sci entists tend to reject any supernat ural explanation of a phenomenon be cause it is not “ scientific,” but the evidence indicates that the phenome na of ESP are related to those of spiritism.) The editors of the encyclopedia make clear in what company they place ouija board practitioners, for they say, “ The medium, or witch doc tor, or fortune teller, whatever his method, would, if he is able to supply knowledge which he could not nor mally obtain, be utilizing extra sen sory perception.” Without question, phenomena of the ouija board, when they are not perpetrated through fraud, are akin to manifestations obtained through a spiritist medium. Playing with a ouija board is one way of contacting evil spirits. Many people, no doubt, do not realize this, but others are fully aware of their contacts. Her bert Booth Smith, a Los Angeles pas tor, reported a case where the police had to interfere. They found that the ouija board devotees had de stroyed jewelry in order to appease the spirit they had contacted with their ouija board and had burned all their paper money which had the numeral 7 in the serial number. This

amounted to about $20. In another case, clothing had been stripped from a girl and burned to appease the spirit of the ouija board. Dr. Thomas de Witt Talmage, the famous New York pastor, once said in a sermon preached before the first world war that there was not an asylum for the insane from Maine to California which did not contain victims of the ouija board. When a young girl named Annie Cable had to be taken away to an asylum for the insane because of her work with the ouija board, her father made an investigation and in seven years he learned of 150 cases of persons taken to insane asylums through their use of the ouija board. The Lord reserves for Himself the prerogative to reveal what He chooses about the future. He has re vealed to us in the Bible many things about the future for our enlighten ment and encouragement. It seems that rather few Christians have even a basic knowledge of these things and many are not even interested. The non-Christian world takes no heed of them. But multitudes are eager to seek answers to their ques tions about the future from deceptive spirits. Every year millions of dol lars are spent on various types of fortune tellers. Besides this waste of money, the answers received have in numerous cases resulted in further financial losses, loss of peace of mind, injuries to health, and even suicide. In cases where sick people have bene fited physically there has generally been an accompanying nervous dis order. Worst of all, however, is the spiritual harm which results from contacts with demons. Thus those who seek knowledge or help from practitioners of the occult and who have been deceived by fraudulent mediums or fortune tellers are the unfortunate ones. The Lord said to the Israelites: “ There shall not be found among you any one that . . . useth divina tion . . . or is an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord . . .” (Deut. 18:10-12).
