PNG Air Volume 41

ABOVE AND TOP LEFT: A sleepy common spotted cuscus watches us from the treetops after we disturb his slumber

of New Ireland. Each night we check the trees, but no luck. Fortunately, the resort staff know about our quest so keep a lookout too, and finally spot

one in the daytime, resting in the top of a tree right in front of the dive shop. With all the noisy activity below its sleeping spot, the cuscus wakes and moves to a more secluded bed, giving us a great view of this lovely orange-coloured creature as it creeps from branch to branch. PNG offers a wonderful variety of unique wildlife, and we are very happy to sample just a little of it during our stay at Kavieng.

RIGHT AND BELOW: Insular flying foxes peer out from their tree roosts, the one on the right inside a coconut palm
