WELL DONE MICHELLE FOR REACHING BASE CAMP!
5,364m 140Km 18 Days 16 People 2 Irish Bars 1 Incredible Experience!
Suspension Bridges, Yaks Trains, Culture and Superhuman Sherpa; Memorials, Mountain Peaks and Mind-bending Scenery. It is an absolute feast for the senses, with a scale and landscape that your
eyes struggle to make sense of. This trip has it all, and then some!
Feeling unusually brave one February morning, I booked the trip, solo, with a group of strangers! What followed was 7 months of strength, conditioning & cardio training, along with a nervous excitement, and at times, sheer terror! Self-deprecating as ever I talked myself in and out of the trip, several times, but those who know me better believed in me. Sept 27th I joined the crew at Dublin Airport and we were Kathmandu bound. An incredible group; fun, interesting and thoughtful people, with whom I would travel again in a heartbeat. The chats & craic up and down the mountain and the group setting made the long and extra-long days breeze by. So what do I say to someone on the cusp of stepping outside of their comfort zone? Go with it, you’re capable of far more than you give yourself credit for.
Dream Big & in Full Colour. Excite yourself, Challenge yourself and Take Risks. Back Yourself & Believe in Yourself.

World Mental Health Day October 10th was World Mental Health Day. The objective of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues worldwide and for people to come together in support of mental health. For World Mental Health Day, we welcomed Ger O’Brien EFT Practitioner and Spiritual Healer to our Swords office to deliver a talk around mental health and wellbeing. Ger gave our staff advice on how to deal with mental health struggles and provided the team with positive affirmations to help enhance their day to day lives. Talks such as Ger’s, drive conversation within our organisation around positive mental health. We aim to create a culture of support, whereby people feel they have someone to turn to within the organisation in times of difficulty. To date, 38 members of our team have become Mental Health First Aiders and support their colleagues in seeking professional support with mental health challenges.

At Ardmac, we are aware of the challenges within our sector in relation to mental health and encourage a positive mental health approach across our organisation. “The {construction} industry has some of the worst rates of suicide in the UK and Ireland, with male construction workers 2.7 times more likely to die by suicide than the average person.” That is why on October 9th, the Ardmac team, our clients, competitors, and friends from across the construction industry came together for Cycle for Hope 2022, which raises vital funds for our appointed charity Pieta House. Cycle for Hope is something tangible Ardmac can do to raise awareness of the services available for those who are struggling with their mental health. Mental health is indiscriminatory and affects people in all walks of life. If you are struggling with your mental health, there are many resources available to help. A very big thank you especially to you, who reached out to contacts and suppliers and got them to participate and sponsor us for the day. This is where most of our donations came from. Their sponsorship and social media campaigns, linked with ours boosted our ratings and our reach significantly. Overall it meant that a great deal of our impact was made before the Cycle even started on the day. Well done to everyone who cycled, marshalled, organised, participated and volunteered on the day, you made it all happen, thank you.

Jonathan Doherty pays tribute to first responders who saved his life Jonathan’s story in The Independent WHEN Jonathan Doherty (43) began feeling pains in his arm after a 5k jog, he thought it was muscular. However the father-of-two couldn’t shake it off as he got out of the shower, and ended up taking to bed before passing out. He didn’t realise he was suffering a massive heart attack that would lead to a cardiac arrest. Mr Doherty has now paid tribute to the “hero” husband-and-wife team who brought him back from being close to death. He says he would not have survived without first-responder neighbours, Deirdre and Jonathan Roughneen. The quantity surveyor is supporting global Restart a Heart Day this month, which urges everyone to know the location of their nearest defibrillator.
16
Oct 2022
Recalling the day of his collapse last June, he says: “I got home, jumped in the shower and started getting pains in my left arm, I thought it was muscular from the run. “I was trying to shake it off and couldn’t so I got into bed and called (my wife) Claire, telling her I didn’t feel too well. I didn’t realise it was massive heart attack that would lead to a cardiac arrest. “Claire called the ambulance service, they ran through some of the symptoms and at the same time they put a call through to the first responders.” It could have ended in tragedy - the Roughneens were seconds away from leaving home for a cycle when they got the call to attend the Doherty home in Kiltale, Co Meath. “They started CPR and did about 10 minutes, with two shocks of the defibrillator, which brought me back. The next strong memory I had was being in the back of an ambulance on the way to the Mater Hospital,” says Mr Doherty. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have survived. I’m here today because of the actions of people who are heroes.” Now recovering with two stents in his heart, Mr Doherty, who has two children Darragh (3) and Grace (8), also plans to train as a first responder. A total of 2,906 people suffered cardiac arrest outside hospital settings in Ireland in 2021 – 74pc of which happened in the home. Our CPR bystander rates – where a cardiac arrest patient is helped by a member of the public before an emergency team arrives – is 85%. But less than 7pc are getting defibrillators onto their chests before first responders or an ambulance arrives. “Your chances of survival rise by 48pc once an AED is used on you,” said Brigid Sinnott, Chairperson, Restart a Heart Group and Resuscitation Manager with the Irish Heart Foundation. “Restart a Heart Day encourages people to be aware of the steps that they can take to save a life: recognise cardiac arrest early, call for emergency help, perform CPR and get the nearest AED. “There may be an element of fear but remember that with CPR and an AED, you can do no harm. Make yourself familiar with your nearest AED and do not be afraid to use it. If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, they need CPR and an AED.” Robert Morton, Director of the National Ambulance Service, said that improving cardiac arrest survival begins in the community. “Early recognition, early CPR and early AED use are the keys to saving more lives. AEDs are very easy to use, so know where your nearest public AED is located because it could save someone’s life,” he said.
Wonderful feature Jonathan, thank you for sharing your story!

This year Ardmac is celebrating 45 years in business. 45 years of excellance.
In the 45 years since its inception, Ardmac has earned itself a reputation not just for delivering results but for exceeding client expectations. This has not gone unnoticed; what was once a small Irish operation is now the leading provider of high-tech cleanrooms, data centre solutions, fit-outs, specialised refurbishments, and turn-key manufacturing facilities across Europe. The past 12-18 months have seen Ardmac complete a whole range of significant projects across Ireland, the UK and Europe; these included a 15,000 sq.m. cleanroom facility for Wuxi Biologics in Dundalk, a large microelectronic project in Kildare, several Data Centre projects in Europe and several high-end commercial fit-outs in Ireland and the UK. Key recent wins have included large Pharma facilities in Limerick, Cork and Finland, Data Centre projects in Denmark, Germany and Austria, and Battery facilities in the UK. Modular construction is fast becoming a key part of the Group’s activity; having already delivered several such projects across Europe, its first modular project in Africa is on track to be delivered by the end of 2022. So far this year the company has been working on several large campus sites, securing further phases.

We have had requests for more team profiles so we asked a few of the Ardmac surveyor team to tell us a little about themselves. We hope this will become a regular feature so keep an eye on your inbox for when we are profilling your department. Who are you?
What do you do? What do you like?
“I’m Eleanor, Quantity Surveyor with Ardmac in the cleanrooms division. I live in Derrylin, Fermanagh with my partner and two beagles. I am only with Ardmac a few months, but I feel like the support network amongst my colleagues is fantastic. The workplace culture is healthy and plays a vital role in the satisfaction of the employees which is clearly evident from speaking with my peers. In my spare time I like to take the dogs on walks around the beautiful lakes of Lough Erne. I also have a keen interest in photography and aviation.”

“Hi, I’m Robbie and my current role is Assoc. Commercial Director with the Pharma team. My wife and I live in Cork and I’m based out of our Cork Office in Little Island, that’s when I’m not on the road or taking to the skies travelling around Europe and the UK. I’m the father of two girls, 20 and 10 years respectively plus a very well behaved Labrador called June so I’m very much outnumbered by females in our house. I love home life and it can be hard to move me away at the weekends! I’ve only recently taken on the Director role so my focus is on building the commercial team and supporting them on getting the most from their careers; there is great satisfaction in seeing my colleagues reach their goals and progress their careers as they see fit; Ardmac offers so many diverse opportunities both here and abroad. At present I’m training for my first ‘full’ marathon later this year and its challenging to stick to the plan; I participate in lots of running, cycling and adventure events and enjoy keeping fit plus meeting up with friends when I get the opportunity; I’m looking forward to the new Rugby season kicking off in Sept, we’re big Munster fans!”
Robbie Marks Assoc. Commercial Director
“I’m Harry, Surveying Manager with Ardmac. I currently live in Odense, Denmark & work on various data centre projects around Europe.
I lead the commercial activities & work closely with the operations team.
In my free time I like sailing, golf, Formula 1 & I regularly travel around the globe & love to explore new places - I’ve been to 26 different countries in Europe & I hope to visit them all one day! What I like most about Ardmac is my team, the technology sectors we work in, and the geographical diversity of the projects”

What is Mental Health First Aid? Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses are a suite of internationally acclaimed and evidence-based training programs that empower and equip individuals with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to support a friend, family member or co-worker experiencing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis such as being suicidal or having a panic attack. The Mental Health First Aid Ireland course teaches people how to provide MHFA. Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of mental health problems and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective. They will learn a framework for communication, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person towards appropriate treatments and other supportive help. Ardmac are very proud to say we have 38 trained Mental Health First Aiders within the company.

Healthy heart tips
Heart disease is one of the major killers today. But it doesn’t have to be that way— heart disease is largely preventable through healthy lifestyle choices. It’s important to remember that the choices you make in your everyday life have direct ramifications on your health, especially your heart. Because your heart serves such a critical function, taking care of it becomes all the more important to your overall health. Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can take your health into your own hands with these healthy heart tips: Get active each week. A healthy heart is one that gets exercised. Physical activity is essential to heart health. The Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week for good heart health. Whether you walk or run, play sports or swim, make sure you build enough active minutes into your week. It doesn’t have to be a chore—find a physical activity you enjoy and just stick with it. Enjoy healthy fats, avoid unhealthy ones. Fat is fat, right? Not so fast. Foods actually contain healthy fats and unhealthy ones. Good fats from vegetables, nuts, seeds and fish can reduce the risk of heart disease, lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol. Some fats, such as omega-3 fats, can even help heart muscles beat in a steady rhythm. Focus on the ones in foods like fish, nuts, avocado and olive oil. Limit your added fats, too, by trimming dressings, spreads, sauces and fried foods from your diet whenever you can. Snap out of a sedentary lifestyle. Even if you exercise, long bouts of sedentary time can hurt your heart health. Sedentary activities can include things such as working on a computer, watching television or reading. Studies suggest that sedentary behavior may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and an overall higher risk of death from any cause. To avoid sedentary periods, get active in your free time. Build movement into your everyday activities and take frequent breaks to stretch your legs if you work at a desk

Don’t smoke and avoid secondhand smoke. Smoking is known to be detrimental to your health, but did you know it’s also bad for your heart? Studies suggest smoking is a major cause of coronary heart disease, which can lead to heart attacks. Smoking leads to a buildup of fatty substances in the arteries, which is a chief contributor to deaths from smoking. Secondhand smoke is also linked to cardiovascular disease. Shed excess weight. Excess weight is an enemy to your heart health—bringing with it a slew of health risks. Being overweight puts extra pressure on your arterial walls and forces your heart to work harder. It also puts you at risk for developing other diseases, such as atherosclerosis, which can lead to hypertension, cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and stroke. Studies suggest that excess weight around the middle puts your heart health at risk. Excess belly fat correlates with higher blood pressure and cholesterol levels, two key risks to the health of your heart. Catch your z’s. You may be surprised to learn that sleep is essential to your heart health. That’s because deep sleep allows the body to go into periods of lowered blood pressure and heart rate. Regardless of age, weight or smoking habits, people who are sleep deprived are at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease. Eat cholesterol-friendly foods. High levels of bad cholesterol threaten the health of your heart. Limit the amount of foods that contain saturated fats, which can increase your cholesterol. These include butter, lard, fatty meats and full-fat dairy products. Instead, support your diet with foods that can naturally lower your cholesterol. Take care of your teeth. The heart is tied to many functions of the body and can be affected by many seemingly unrelated functions. You may be surprised to hear that your heart health can be compromised by poor dental hygiene. Studies show a link between the bacteria that causes gum disease and increased risk of heart disease. Taking care of your teeth and keeping gum disease at bay also reduces the body’s inflammatory response. Inflammation in the body can cause a buildup of substances in the blood that can worsen heart disease. So, be sure to brush at least twice a day and don’t forget to floss.

What Matters and how to tell what is important the New Happy The world wants to tell you what is important for you. Part of living an authentic life is figuring out what is really important to you. It’s a difficult task, one that takes practice and effort.
Try This Here are a few tricks you can use in the next moment you’re feeling pulled in multiple directions.
1) Ask yourself: What really matters to me right now? 2) Step away from the world for just a moment (put down your phone, go somewhere quiet, take a breath.) This turns down the volume on the external messages. Now that it’s quiet, what is your inner voice saying? 3) Before you go to sleep, reflect on what was the most important moment of the day. What does this teach you? How can you incorporate this wisdom into tomorrow?
