Inspiration can arrive in numerous ways and from countless sources. We can find inspiration in a conversationwith a friend, a song that pops up on our playlist, or from a walk outside. This past year we at Fōmcore were inspired by the students at Desert Hot Springs HS in Desert Hot Springs, California. In conjunction with one of our dealer partners, we teamed up with a Career Tech class of Juniors at DHSHS for our first ever For Students by Students project. We had a simple premise: connect with students and staff at a local school to craft a tailor- made curriculum that allows students to design a unique piece of furniture that serves a purpose in their classroom. We were blown away by what the students came up with. Through the direction of Career Tech teacher, Stacy Ward, students had to develop and design a “mindful” piece of furniture in which students could decompress and find realignment. For three months students worked in teams, thinking through construction and design elements but even more, engaged in philosophical conversations on how a space makes us “feel” and the “purpose” furniture should serve in such spaces. At the end of the of three months students presented their ideas, and in the end we landed on the “NEST”; a versatile piece that allows for students to thoughtfully engage with a group or find a quiet moment alone. In addition to receiving a NEST for their school and a $1,000 grant, the students were given the platform to engage in a learning/discovery process with real world application. How awesome!
