Fishful Thinking: Waking Up To The Truth About Fish Oil, Fish and Fishes BY MARY FINELLI

Additionally, as with fish, fish oil can be contaminated with pesticides, mer- cury and other heavy metals. Fish oil is generally consumed in or- der to obtain beneficial omega fatty ac- ids. Better omega sources include wal- nuts, flaxseed oil, flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and, for a concentrated dose, algae supplements—algae being how fishes obtain their omegas. (“Fish- es” is the word used to indicate more than one species of fish, and increas- ingly it is used to indicate that each fish is a unique, sentient being.) “It’s really kind of a wake-up call when you see a study like this where the most potent, prescription-grade fish oil didn’t have any favorable effects,” states Steven Nissen, MD, Chief Aca- demic Officer of the Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic. “A very high-dose, of a very powerful fish oil...didn’t produce any reduction in the risk of heart attack, stroke or death,” he recently explained. In fact, research- ers studying the data from more than 13,000 people, who were already taking statins (anti-inflammatories), found that those taking the fish oil were 69% more likely to develop an irregular heartbeat! Despite long being touted as ben- eficial for an array of ailments, fish oil is continually found not only to fail to help but also actually to pose a poten- tial health hazard. For example, it can quickly become rancid, which may in- crease the risk of inflammation, athero- sclerosis, organ damage, and cancer.
