FATAL ACCIDENT ON LONG SAULT BRIDGE

Police are investigating a fatal accident Friday morning on Long Sault Bridge. The OPP, Hawkesbury Fire Department and the ambulance service responded to a call about an injured person found on the Long Sault Bridge Friday morning, October 7, around 5 a.m. The injured person was taken to Hawkes- bury & District Regional General Hospital (HGH) for treatment. The individual was later pronounced dead as a result of those injuries. The name of the deceased is not being released at this time. Long Sault Bridge spans the Ottawa River between Hawkesbury in Ontario and Grenville in Québec. Part of the westbound lane closest to the side of the bridge was cordoned off and two OPP patrol vehicles stationed at the site for traffic control and to help preserve the scene for investiga- tors. A tarpaulin cover was secured over the pedestrian walkway to help shelter both the site and also a bike that may been involved in the accident. The OPP Technical Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Unit is now involved. A 20-year-old resident of Cornwall was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment but was later pronounced dead. Three other people were also taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. Officers with the OPP Technical Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Unit are reviewing details related to the collision to determine the cause.
