TRUST IS PARAMOUNT And Other Insights From the 2024 Summit
In March, we assembled a group of sales and operations leaders from across the company for the 2024 Summit. The annual event intends to help our leaders focus on a common mission and vision for the next 12 months. It would be amazing to be able to do an offsite event like this with everyone across the company, but with nearly 700 employees, that’s not feasible. We gather a representative group of leaders so they can take back to their teams and locations the experience and lessons learned. The Summit is a strategic investment we make every year to ensure everyone is going in the same direction and at the same pace across the company, and it is critical to us in achieving our annual and long-term goals. We make investments to improve our people, processes, facilities, and customer experience with an expectation that the investment will generate a return that exceeds the cost, which is the basic rhythm of maintaining and growing a successful business for the benefit of our employee-owners. In addition to reviewing our 2026 Vision, we spent a good bit of time during the 2024 Summit unpacking how trust has eroded in society in a wide variety of ways, how that impacts us all, and what we can do to
either establish or strengthen trust within our organization and among customers. Without trust, our relationships, transactions, and day-to-day lives can become much harder or cease working. When the word “trust” is thrown out there, most of us immediately assume the issue is one of morality or character. While this is undoubtedly one key element of trust, several other elements are important for us to understand and do some self-reflection on if we want to develop more trust in relationships, whether at work or elsewhere. In this and subsequent cover articles I will pen this year, I’ll unpack the five elements of trust we can use to grow and improve together, improving relationships in every area of our lives. As I shared at the Summit event, trust is like the lubrication or oil in the gears of relationships and society. If the gears are not well lubricated with ample trust, there is a lot more friction, and everything slows down or sometimes comes to a screeching halt. When trust is high, the gears run fast and run smoothly. The five elements of trust, framed by those who study trust in relationships and society (psychologists, sociologists, etc.), are character, understanding, motive, ability, and consistency. We’ll unpack these more in the coming months, but I wanted to share the “why” behind gathering leaders every year and how we expect to reap the benefits of investments we make in those leaders and you. We can and need to be a higher-trust organization. If we can, we’ll be faster and better with less angst and friction. It won’t happen automatically, though. We all have to reflect honestly on when, where, and why we lack trust in others and do the hard work to build up our weaknesses to become stronger.

SPOTLIGHTING BELLEVUE YARD
Elizabeth Wagner — Dispatcher Liz has been working in the lumber industry for almost 10 years. She came from our competition, and we are sure glad she did. Liz excels at problem-solving and making things better. She is a leader at our location for safety and continuous improvement. Donny Karst — Receiver Donny is one of our seasoned vets. He has been with us for 10 years and even longer in the industry. He is the go-to guy for our employees, the general manager included. When Donny isn’t at work keeping our inventory accurate, he’s going to concerts. He has the best playlist in Bellevue. Mario — Yard Manager Mario has been in our industry since 1996, when he started working for Yard Manager Jim Shaffer in Bellevue. Mario sets the bar for safety and customer service. He mentors and coaches his employees to work in that order. Safety, then customer service. In Mario’s spare time, he enjoys welding and woodworking in his shop. Bellevue has earned a reputation as the go-to destination for top-notch service and unparalleled quality, largely thanks to our dedicated yard crew.
Three miles out from a small town’s main street and in the weeds off Glendale Road sits our Bellevue location. Even though we’re off the beaten path, our customers make the trip, and a large part of the reason is our exceptional yard crew. Our yard crew keeps our facility running smooth and covers a 150-mile delivery radius. This team shows up daily, braves the best weather Idaho offers, and sets the standard for pride and quality for which Bellevue wants to be known. Juan Baeza — Load Builder Juan worked as a chef in a restaurant for 26 years before making a career change. He’s unmatched when cooking breakfast and operates a forklift like nobody’s business. Fidel Castro — CDL Driver Fidel worked many years in construction, where he learned to take pride in quality craftsmanship. This sense of pride in his work has followed Fidel to Franklin. He goes above and beyond for our customers and his fellow team members daily. Paul Dean — CDL Driver Paul traveled the world working as an executive chef for many years before moving to the Wood River Valley. He has been
with us for almost five years and recently accomplished his lifelong goal of getting his CDL. Paul has been an instrumental part of
building our Bellevue culture. Greg Babikoff — CDL Driver
Greg came from Portland, Oregon, where he worked as a millwright in the steel industry for many years. He is a people person and one of our best at customer service. In his spare time, Greg engineers and fabricates whitewater rafts. Jose Martinez — CDL Jose, our longest-tenured employee in Bellevue, has been with the company for 12 years. Jose is the face our builders know and trust when it comes to delivering their lumber. He probably knows more people in our industry than Lumpy.

was unbroken, and all of the first-floor pack was neatly staged on the job site it was intended for. I know that for most builders, this alone is appreciated. But I also know about the safety culture that Franklin Building Supply emphasizes. More than the clean and accurate delivery, I wanted to let you
know about what else I saw. Your driver was parked neatly in the middle of the street with his hazard lights on, had ample room on both sides for any possible traffic to navigate around him safely, was wearing his high vis, and was probably doing other safety protocols that I am unaware of. He truly was doing the right thing with no one watching.” Strive From: Wayne Luker, Twin Door and Finish Manager
To: Wendell Thompson, Equipment Maintenance Specialist Wendell rocks! Twice now he has traveled to our location and worked several days to help us set up and reorganize our shop equipment. His technical expertise and watchful eye are invaluable. His tremendous work effort and relentless commitment to getting it right add degrees of confidence in the final result without sacrificing safety and efficiency. His attention to detail and expertise are paying dividends to FBS.

team’s development and well-being creates a workplace where everyone can feel challenged, supported, and appreciated. We build success together and are proud of each of our team members. Ethan Crane is our Yard Lead at our Burley, Idaho, location. He wears many hats and handles his responsibilities with ease and efficiency. He ensures the yard remains clean and manages a team to keep operations running smoothly. Additionally, Ethan supports the yard crew in assisting customers by loading products and answering queries. He also plays a significant role in loading builders’ orders and ensuring accurate and timely deliveries. “I enjoy meeting and talking to builders and learning new things about the building
and lumber industry. I love seeing positive progress within the company and the people,” Ethan tells us. “One thing I don’t like is being at work without my tool belt.” We have a fun fact to share about Ethan’s tool belt, or as we call it, his Batman utility belt. About once a week, he adds a new accessory to it! Outside of work, Ethan loves to stay busy. He’s always the guy to help his friends and family with small building projects or handyman tasks, and he loves getting his hands dirty with yard work. You may even catch him playing disc golf at a local park! Ethan, the past two years with you on board have been amazing. We look forward to many more! Keep up the great work!
