Virtual reality drug experience gone wrong

John is a client with Harmony House, a non-profit agency that helps drug addicts who have survived their addiction to stay clean and straight. His story is the finale to a day-long presentation, April 23, of a Virtual Reality Tour program for drug abuse aware- ness and information, sponsored through the support of the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB), the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO), Champlain Township council, local busi- nesses, the OPP and Prescott-Russell Am- bulance Service.
The Virtual Reality Tour is an internation- ally-acclaimed programhelping both youth and adults be better informed and aware of the risks of substance use and abuse. It presents facts about addiction, including how it exists at all levels of society, combined with several role-playing scenarios of a youth who becomes an addict, from his or her first dose, to first arrest, and later to death by overdose, followed by a funeral service for his or her family and friends, including fellow surviving addicts.
“It’s important for the parents to hear the samemessage as the students,” said Carroll Carkner, UCDSB trustee for Prescott-Russell and co-coordinator of the Virtual Reality Tour. “We already have a waiting list for the Oc- tober event,” said fellow coordinator Sharon Hill, CDSBEO trustee. “We’re grandparents,” added Carkner, “and that’s another reason why we’re in- volved in this.”
John is a recovering drug addict. He is out of “the life” now, which is more than can be said of the people he used to call his friends during that time. “All of my friends then are dead,” John told an audience of 100 children, teenagers, and parents fromcommunities around Prescott- Russell gathered in the gymnasiumat Pleas- ant Corners Public School in Vankleek Hill, on a cold but sunny Saturday afternoon.
