Transverse Analysis, Airway & the Orthodontic Role The “width” of our smiles are often the first thing people notice. But apart from the esthetics, the width of one’s dental arch holds many keys in solving some of our most common dental challenges. For dentists, orthodontists, or any dental professional evaluating their patients occlusion, airway, and overall dental health, the transverse skeletal dimension is often the most overlooked and most misunderstood. We will discuss how the transverse dimension develops in patients and what implications this holds for patients in terms of occlusion, periodontal health, growth and development, function, and airway. What problems can be treated with simple dental movements and which require more extensive surgical intervention? How is all of this related to airway and potential OSA concerns? By using both CBCT and photographic analysis, we will be able to quickly and easily identify these challenges our effectively and be able to communicate the importance of treating these issues to our patients.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1.Learn to critically evaluate patient’s in terms of skeletal and dental widths 2.Recognize skeletal and dental transverse deficiencies and their potential dental and airway challenges 3.Understand the development of palatal width and how it affects growth, development, and airway 4.Identify airway challenges in your patients, both pediatric and adult 5.Understand how skeletal deficiencies are related to airway challenges in patients 6.Discuss what orthodontic options may address both dental and skeletal transverse issues in our patients

TAPPING INTO THE ZEITGEIST Amid accelerating technology disruption, Bill Gates famously once said, "We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten." Those who fail to adapt may become obsolete as the digital landscape rewrites the standard of care again and again with new and emerging technologies. Meanwhile, those who continue to grow and evolve with technology will not just get ahead but stay relevant. It does, however, mean an ongoing development journey. That’s why these study clubs are so critical. With AI pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in our industry and every other, there has never been a more critical time to belong to a community committed to learning.
We may not have all the answers, but one thing is certain. We are smarter, better, faster when we learn and grow together.
So bring your ideas, questions, and curiosity. This is just the beginning!
