Paediatric Ward Familiarisation Guide for Caregivers & Parents Admission & General Guidelines
• Keep cot sides up, bed locked, and bumper pads in place. • Watch the fall prevention video on Channel 1.
• No siblings allowed to stay; max 2 visitors (above 12 years) at a time. • Do not enter other patient rooms or play areas unless permitted. • Patients should not sit on the floor or walk barefoot—use slippers or shoes. • Rub feet with SOFTALIND before getting onto the bed (including parents). • Inform nurses when the caregiver changes. Nurse will help to oriented the new caretaker. • Practice proper hand hygiene before/after touching the patient or surroundings. • Wash hands after using the toilet. • Yellow bin: items with body fluids (e.g., diapers, gloves). Black bin: general waste. • Do not take photos, videos, or voice recordings of staff or doctors without permission. • Taught on hand washing and feeding bottle technique (rinse with drinking hot water after cleanse the bottle).
Safety • Patients must be accompanied by a caregiver 24/7.
• Do not place hot water flasks on tables or items under the bed/sink. • Children under 3 must use baby cots (consent required if declined). • Inform nurses of any food or drug allergies. • Medication Information Sheets will be provided—refer to them during medication times.
Intake & Output (I/O) • Record all food and fluid intake (including porridge, soup, water). • Demo how to write on I/O paper will be given by nurses. • Use the measuring cup provided in the admission kit. • Nurses will collect I/O records at: • 12–1 PM
• 6–7 PM • 4–5 AM
IV Drip & IV Line Care • Caregivers must not touch or remove IV drips. • Inform nurses if the drip is empty or alarms sound. • Know the drip rate per hour. • Nurses will handle flushing and dressing of IV lines. • Notify nurses if the IV site is red, swollen, bleeding, or painful. • IV lines will be wrapped before bathing (done by nurses). • Nurse will use COMBI RED to spigot the IV Drip
Diet & Feeding Meal times: • Breakfast: 8 AM
• Lunch: 12 PM • Dinner: 6 PM • Order meals via QR code. Consume within 2 hours. • Inform nurses of any food allergies
Perineal Care • Check and change diapers every 2–3 hours (at least twice per shift). • Use basin, water, and cotton DO NOT USE baby wipes. • Inform nurses if rashes appear; nappy cream will be provided if prescribed. Sleep Chair & Extra Bed • Sleep chair (RM31) and extra bed (RM37) are chargeable and may not covered by insurance. Linen Care • Linen is changed daily. • Dirty linen with body fluids must be placed in a red plastic bag (chargeable). • Do not write on or take home hospital linen.
Isolation (if applicable) Follow PPE instructions and proper disposal methods. • Use yellow bins for contaminated waste and black bins for general waste.
