Letter from the Director

Dear Friends and Colleagues: A sound barometer for the new frontiers in real estate and related industries is the trending that evolves in our urban sleeping giants. As you may already know, sustainability is on the rise in the City of Camden, NJ. This past February 10th, Camden passed a new Sustainability Ordinance. Plus, on March 20th, the Camden SMART Initiative will hold the 3rd Annual SMART Forum on best management practices for green and grey stormwater management techniques. Camden’s new Sustainability Ordinance will require all applicants for new development or modifications of existing development to submit an Environ- mental Impact and Benefits Assessment (EIBA) to the city’s planning depart-

ment to attest that the development will not adversely affect the air and water quality of proximate neighborhoods, and that quality of life issues (complete streets, recreation, open space, etc.) are addressed. Camden is the only city in New Jersey to pass such an ordinance, and it is one of just a handful of sustainability ordinances in the US that address environmental justice and cumulativ impacts. What else has Camden been up to? The City of Camden is tackling its extreme urban water infrastructure challenges through an innovation and dynamic partnership called the Camden SMART (Stormwater Management And Resource Training) Initiative. The Camden SMART Initiative is a community-driven movement to protect human health, improve conditions for economic development, improve water quality, and enhance the quality of life for Camden City, its resi- dents, and the Delaware River watershed through the broad use of green and grey infrastructure techniques for stormwater management. The March 20th SMART Forum provides an opportunity for environmental leaders, community groups, nonprofit organizations, green businesses, and government officials to unite under a common agenda. It will feature an inspirational keynote speech, panel discussions, exhibits, networking, tours, and more. We are so pleased with Camden’s recent accomplishments and look forward to more to come! Look for upcoming USGBC NJ events in the Camden area to continue to focus on advocacy, energy, and the environment. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions about USGBC NJ at (973) 290-0013, or executivedirector@usgbcnj.org.
