1 Christy Mathewson Signed, First Edition “Pitching In A Pinch” (JSA) Beautiful first editionof Pitching inaPinch byChristyMathewson, signed on the interior by Mathewson in beautiful, bold fountain pen, and dated June 3, 1912. One of just a handful of signed examples of this book we have found in our research, this example has been tucked away in an advanced collection for quite some time. During the 1912 season, the Giants took on four teams during a lengthy homestand that began on May 31 and lasted until June 18. Each of the signed examples of Pitching in a Pinch we have encountered were dated during that stretch, an indication that perhaps Mathewson was engaged in some sort of local promotion to help book sales.
The book itself is in outstanding condition, the cover exhibiting minor wear and the interior pages stable and intact. Some professional restoration has been done on the interior to stabilize the title page and repair a small tear, and it appears that similar efforts have been undertaken with the flyleaf, to secure it to the spine. Overall, however, the book has been remarkably well-preserved. With Mathewson signatures coming under increased scrutiny, this example was freshly authenticated in advance of this auction, a clear and stunning example of a Mathewson-signed item dating to his playing years.
