golden era, almost in its entirety. When he took those first photographs under the sun, Christy Mathewson was still in his mid-20s. Walter Johnson had yet to become a Washington institution. Willie Keeler and Joe McGinnity, stars from the 19th century, were in their twilight. And by the time Conlon had stopped going to the New York ballparks to shoot, Ty Cobb, Napoleon Lajoie and Honus Wagner were long retired. Newcomers like Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio and Stan Musial were in their ascent to the pinnacle of the sport. In the end, Charles Conlon had taken a job of documenting the look of the sport for the national guides, and was able to create the extraordinary from the seemingly mundane - which has always been, in my mind, the hallmark of powerful artwork. Graig Kreindler, born in 1980, grew up in Rockland County, New York.
