Love of the Game Auctions Fall, 2018 Catalog

Lot 293: 1895 N300 Mayo’s Cut Plug Ed Delahanty (HOF) - SGC VG/EX 4 The grade of VG/EX 4, while technically accurate, does not do justice to this card. Beautiful from top to bottom, with a clear image and rich, black borders, a tad of excess chipping and rounding at the upper-right prevents the card from attaining a higher technical grade. Regardless, sharp edges and square corners suggest something higher; this must certainly be the finest VG/ EX Delehanty in the hobby. One of the most desirable of all 19th Century baseball card subjects, the mystery of Delahanty’s death certainly adds to his legend. His talent, however, was tremendous; hitting .400 three times with a lifetime batting average of .346, an even .500 OBP in 1895 and nearly 2600 lifetime hits are achievements paralleled by only the greatest the game has known. If it’s possible for such a legendary figure to be underrated, this would be our claim when it comes to Delahanty; despite being one of the most highly coveted subjects of his era, greater accolades are assigned to the likes of Buck Ewing despite Delahanty’s far greater numbers. Minimum Bid: $2,500.00

Lot 294: Beautiful 1895 N300 Mayo’s Cut Plug Dan Brouthers (HOF

- Louisville) - SGC EX+ 5.5 Minimum Bid: $2,500.00

(Retired) have just one example graded higher between the two companies. The Cap Anson and John Ward have just two examples graded higher. What’s more stunning about the technical assessments of these cards, however, is their wonderful visual appeal. Each of the cards are simply stunning, well- centered with a crisp, glossy image and minimal edge chipping. As is the case with the issue, most of the midgrade examples do exhibit some chipping, but the edges and corners are strong. These are, without a doubt, the finest group of Mayos we have seen come to auction at one time, and unquestionably the most exciting grouping of 19th Century cards we have ever offered. ■
