Love of the Game Auctions Fall, 2018 Catalog

Lot 300: 1895 N300 Mayo’s Cut Plug Amos Russie (HOF - Spelling Incorrect) - SGC EX+ 5.5 (1/1, 0 Higher) One of the tougher cards in the set, pitcher Amos Rusie’s name was initially misspelled with an extra “s” before being corrected. This created a more difficult variation within the set, one of the more valuable and highly sought-after cards of the issue. Graded EX+ 5.5 by SGC, the card appears far greater than the assigned grade, modest corner touches responsible for the grade. No examples have graded higher by either SGC or PSA, and this example appears far greater than the assigned grade. Well-centered with a clean, crisp image, the card is simply stellar. Minimum Bid: $2,000.00

Lot 301: 1895 Mayo’s Cut Plug John Ward (HOF - 2nd Base) - SGC VG/EX 4 Most certainly printed in 1894, this card depicts Monty Ward in the final year of his career, listed as a second baseman with New York. The grade of VG/EX 4 is deceptive; first, just two examples have graded higher than this with either grading company. Second, the card presents wonderfully, left-to-right centering likely responsible for the grade but certainly not detracting from the visual appeal of the card. Sharp edges and corners suggest an EX or perhaps better assessment, the image quality is deep and rich. Minimum Bid: $1,000.00

Lot 302: 1895 N300 Mayo’s Cut Plug John Ward (HOF - Retired) - SGC EX 5 - 1/2, 1 Higher! Extraordinary example of the “retired” variation of Hall of Famer John Ward’s Mayo card. Though SGC has assigned a grade of EX 5 to the card, it appears far superior, the very slight corner chipping at the two bottom and upper-right corners accounting for the technical assessment, but having very little impact on overall visual appeal. The quality of the image is strong, the borders a deep black, corners and edges sharp and square. Border chipping is a well-known condition sensitivity with Mayo cards; between both SGC and PSA, just one other example has been graded at this level, with only one higher. Minimum Bid: $1,000.00
