Love of the Game Auctions Fall, 2018 Catalog

386 1910 E98 Near-Complete SGC Graded Set (26/30) Issued in 1910, the 30-card set referred to simply by its ACC designation of “E98” still remains a mystery. With color lithographs set against a solid background, each of the cards can be found with four different backdrop colors - red, green, blue and orange. Prior to 2012 the E98 cards were considered relatively difficult to find. The “Black Swamp Find” of that year flooded the hobby with more than 700 new examples, each of high grade (and mostly with red backgrounds). During that time, the Black Swamp Find caused the graded population of E98 cards to double. Since the discovery, we have considered the “Black Swamp” cards to be a separate set, distinct form the E98s that were actually distributed in their year of issue. THose cards remain relatively difficult to obtain, with all 30 cards available in all four different colors, and condition and eye appeal continuing to be at a premium. While “Black Swamp cards in higher grade are

relatively common today due to their recent introduction to the hobby, we maintain that “original” E98s are fascinating and beautiful, with some very difficult player/color combinations and a fantastic overall player selection. We are thrilled to offer a nearly-complete set, of lower technical grade but in most cases boasting wonderful aesthetic appeal. Missing just four cards for completion (Clarke, Cobb, Jennings and Walsh), this is an outstanding and very attractive grouping. A complete breakdown by condition is as follows: SGC VG 3 (4 cards): Davis, Dooin, Kling, Mullin; SGC GOOD 2 (6 cards) : Bender (HOF), Brown (HOF), Dahlen, Evers (HOF), McLean, Tinker (HOF); SGC FAIR 1.5 (4 cards): Bridwell, Coombs, Ford, Tenny; SGC POOR 1 (5 cards): Bresnahan (HOF), Chase, Collins (HOF), Meyers, Young (HOF); SGC AUTHENTIC (7 cards): Chance (HOF), Lajoie (HOF), Mack (HOF), Mathewson (HOF), McGraw (HOF), Vaughn, Wagner (HOF). The “authentic” graded Hall of Famers all present sharp and clean, like EX/MT to NM cards. An outstanding selection, one of the hobby’s most popular caramel issues. 26 cards total. MINIMUM BID: $1,000.00
