A Conversation About Something We All Must Face

He always had to sniff each bush to see who’d been around, when we took our daily walks through the community which was our town. And as the clock turned neat 1:00 p.m., he’d always sense the time, to chase the red laser dot , before getting his chance to dine. And at the front door, he’d watch for any visitors to arrive each day,

This month, I want to take a somber look at and have a conversation about something that is inevitable — something we all face in life.

I recently lost a client I was very close to. This client never complained about anything when we got together. Whenever we had a meeting, he was always super happy to see me and just be in the room. As I explained the details to him, he would look at me and let me know he understood. But I could tell he didn’t care one way or the other because he knew everything I was doing was for his benefit and position.

When I learned he passed away, it hit me like a ton of bricks. You might say, “Gary, this happens all the time. We enjoy life; we live, and we die.”

then run and get his “ Woobie ” toy, showing them all that he’d like to play. And each night he’d hop up on our bed, with his head toward the door, I’d remind him, “ You’ve to guard duty! ” but I don’t know how he did it through his audible snore. You were once so young and seemed to play forever, being so free, but age has now caught up to you, the effects are now plain to see! The pains and cries you’ve lately made were due to more than we could know! It is with painful hearts and sobbing tears, that we have decided to let you go! And now the time has come for you to physically depart, I shed the tears, through all the fears, and a pain has filled my heart! I looked down on the veterinarian’s floor on which you had to lie, and I laid there next to you upon that floor, as you were about to die! We were nose-to-nose , and I rubbed your head, as you received that fatal dose, and I whispered softly in your ear, “ Wait for me at the Rainbow Bridge ,” once again we will be close! Oh, how I wish that you could have stayed!

The reason this hit me harder than most because of all the financial advisors that came into his sphere, he made it clear that then on, I was the only person who would ever handle his assets. It’s that commitment — 100% all-in — that I will never forget. Now, I want to share with you a poem, written by someone who (probably) cared even more about my client than me. “On the Death of Our Dog, Patches” John H. Trestrail III, Jan. 17, 2019 “He’s beautiful!” and “His hair is so soft!” almost everyone would say, He traveled well for the many days on the very long ride in our car, from Michigan to NewMexico which, for us, was a ride so very far. He settled in well to our new home in the West , his activities a delight for us all to see, he had a personality that was unique, there was no other dog like he. Each day the post arrived, his very loud bark would alert all around without fail, saying to all the neighbors it was the time, they could go and get their mail. He came into our life as a puppy, all black and white. It was clear to see that to our lives, he would be such a delight! As he matured, he became noticed by all on their way,

THE FREE RADICAL 411

HOW TO MINIMIZE AGE-INDUCING ATOMS

If you’ve ever picked up a health magazine while waiting at the doctor’s office, then you’re probably familiar with the term “free radicals”— at least enough to know that they get a bad rap from doctors and beauticians alike. But what are they, exactly? According to Live Science, free radicals are atoms with unpaired electrons that have split off from oxygen molecules in the body and started to “scavenge” for other electrons to pair with. That wouldn’t be problematic, except that these atoms tend to damage cells, lipids, proteins, and even DNA along the way, and that destruction has serious consequences. As Live Science puts it, “Free radicals are associated with human disease, including cancer, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and many others. They also may have a link to aging, which has been defined as a gradual accumulation of free-radical damage.”

oxidative stress, can be kick-started by a variety of different substances found in food, water, medicine, and even the air we breathe, according to the Huntington’s Outreach Project for Education at Stanford University. Unsurprisingly, these substances are things already considered unhealthy, like alcohol, exposure to X-rays, ozone, fried food, chemical pesticides, air pollutants, and tobacco smoke. That said, there is one molecule that is stable enough to stand up to and reduce free radicals: the antioxidant. According to a study published by Pharmacognosy Reviews, antioxidants can “donate an electron to a rampaging free radical and neutralize it, thus reducing its ability to damage.” Synthetic antioxidants exist but can sometimes have harmful side effects, so scientists advise protecting yourself by avoiding free radical triggers like alcohol, processed foods, and red meat, and ingesting natural antioxidants in the form of berries, stone fruits, olives, onions, garlic, and green and black teas. Herbs and spices like cinnamon, basil, turmeric, and fenugreek can ratchet up

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to entirely avoid free radicals and the havoc they wreak. The process that forms free radicals, called

‘WOMEN, WORK & THE ART OF SAVOIR FAIRE: BUSINESS SENSE & SENSIBILITY’

A Woman’s Guide to Corporate Success

While Mireille Guiliano is best known for “French Women Don’t Get Fat,” her book on healthy eating and balanced living, authorship is actually her second career. Before she took up the pen, Guiliano was president and CEO of the French Champagne brand Veuve Clicquot. She developed Veuve Clicquot’s reputation in

talk about style, and clothes, and food, and wine, and entertaining, and LIFE in a business book. We don’t work in a vacuum.”

Guiliano is true to her word. Between the covers, readers will find advice on topics as far-ranging as developing the perfect handshake, choosing catering for a business dinner, dressing for success, and putting together an effective presentation. Guiliano has plenty of experience to back up her counsel and shares amusing anecdotes about the food and beverage industry, French culture, and her own journey along the way. There are no easy three-step solutions here, only long-term goals and strategies. What really makes “Women, Work & the Art of Savoir Faire” unique is that it caters specifically to women in pursuit of high-powered CEO or CFO jobs. Guiliano covers circumventing prejudice right alongside choosing a dress and tips on being the perfect lunch date. Still, both men and women will come away from this book with ideas about how to achieve success without sacrificing the pleasures French women hold so dear.

America almost single-handedly over a 20-plus year career, and now she has chronicled that success in her 2010 bestseller “Women, Work & the Art of Savoir Faire: Business Sense & Sensibility”— a guide to climbing the corporate ladder geared specifically toward women. Just as “French Women Don’t Get Fat” upended the typical diet book format, “Women, Work & the Art of Savoir Faire” leaves the usual business book style behind almost immediately. As Guiliano writes in her introduction, “This isn’t another business book that tells you how to ‘succeed’ or ‘get the corner office.’Yes, of course, you’ll find advice on getting ahead and getting promoted … but more than that, you’ll find advice on being happy and living a good life, even while you are making the biggest contribution you can to the workplace. That’s why I dare to

For now, I realize, along with you, a little piece of me died today! I now look around our home, but do not see you there, and the absence of the normal sounds you made, is more than I can bear! I still think about the things we’d always do, to spend our time at play, our walks, our talks were so much fun, and our snuggles that would end our day. We now both have decided there will be no more pets — like you there would be very few. “ Patches, ” you were so very unique, we never had another dog like you! Yes, this poem is about a dog named Patches, and the client I was speaking about was this very dog. Those of us who knew Patches knew him as much more than a dog. He was a good friend, and he touched so many lives. Patches’ owners made sure to include a provision in their estate plan so that if anything ever happened to them, Patches would be taken care of. While they were never in that situation, it highlights the love and care they placed on Patches. And it’s something you can do to. Look at your own situation; if you have a loved one like Patches, make sure you have plans for them as well, just in case.

In 1790, a school teacher named Ichabod Crane was riding home alone from a harvest festival in the village of Sleepy Hollow when he encountered a mysterious rider on horseback. Crane, horrified by the horseman’s missing head, turned and ran in the opposite direction. The Headless Horseman gave chase, hurling his own decapitated head at the terrified teacher. Ichabod Crane was never heard from again ... or so goes “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. This story, first published in 1820, has become a Halloween favorite. The legend is so beloved that in 1997, the village of North Tarrytown, New York, where many events of the story take place, officially changed its name to Sleepy Hollow. Today, the town becomes one big Halloween party during the month of October. Sleepy Hollow is home to many historic landmarks, including the Headless Horseman Bridge and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving himself was laid to rest. Evening lantern tours of the cemetery are a popular attraction, and Irving isn’t the only spooky celebrity buried there. Fans of the Gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows”will be delighted to enter the crypt of famed vampire Barnabas Collins. HALLOWEEN CELEBRATIONS IN SLEEPY HOLLOW Hayrides and Headless Horsemen

Another highly anticipated stop for many guests is Sleepy Hollow’s premier annual attraction, Horseman’s Hollow, an experience not for the faint of heart. During the event, the 300-year-old Philipsburg Manor is transformed into a living nightmare, where vampires, witches, ghouls, and undead soldiers lurk in the shadows. They all serve the dreaded Headless Horseman and are determined to make sure guests don’t leave alive! But it’s not all scares in Sleepy Hollow. There’s plenty of Halloween fun for all ages. Sleepy Hollow boasts relaxing hayrides, tours of Irving’s home, live readings of famous Halloween stories, performances of a brand-new musical based on Irving’s spooky tale, and the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, an incredible exhibition of over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins.

If you want a real Halloween experience, you can’t go wrong in Sleepy Hollow. Just be careful not to lose your head!
